Gaah, I thought this was just my crappy Apex.
I think mine fuzzed up a bit right there, but kept running. I'm using a
PS2, BTW.

I do not have my copy yet, it is in shipping. Now I am a little worried.
I noticed on D&R when Rebirth started the top of the picture was skewed
horizontally but not bad enough to complain.

any fool can make a rule, and every fool will follow it
don't be a fool!!!
I just got my copy tonight, it plays into chapter 9, but there is a defiant
lag and a loud "search" sound from the player.
The other notes about it is; my fan sub did not have the live action
segment in the beginning, so now I see what it was that I couldn't figure
out what people were talking about.
The second is the heftig and erste, argument about what Auska said in her
big fight scene. On my fan sub, it sure did sound like heftig, which it
was subtitled as, but on the DVD 5.1 soundtrack it is clearly erste.

Same here. I'm running a Panisonic. Interesting though, when I go
backwards and replay it, it's fine.

Remove invalid and nospam to reply.
A lot of these discs have problems of varying severity. Manga Entertainment
is working on a recall program, supposedly. Go see www.animenewsnetwork.com
for details.

(specific to Region 1 DVD from Manga)
A followup. Manga finally confirms some defective discs were shipped:
<http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=2767>
"First off, Keith acknowledged that some of the DVDs were in fact
defective and explains the actual defect. Of aproximately 70 000 End
of Eva DVDs produced, one batch of about 5000 did not press correctly,
resulting in the second layer being somewhat off-center. Depending on
the DVD player, this resulted in anything from some minor skipping, to
the second part of the DVD being completely unplayable."
Disc exchange program info:
<http://www.animeondvd.com/press/manga/manga022.php>
" If you have experienced difficulties playing your disc, we recommend
the following:
1.If you have purchased a possible problematic disc, please return it
to your store for an exchange. It is highly likely that the
replacement disc will perform correctly.
2.If this procedure does not work for you, please send us your disc
including the packaging to:
Manga Entertainment
Evangelion DVD
P.O. Box 482
Lincolnshire, Il 60069-0482
"
So anyone planing on purchasing a used or auction R1 EoE disc should
beware... may have to pay shipping again to get a working replacement
from Manga!

And how do they plan on rectifying the absolutely wretched video
transfer?

Well thats sort of a releif. I was afraid someone was trying a new copy
protection sceme and that in about two years half the dvds wouldnt play on
our older players like is happening with the game and music cd's. Not that I
blame the media producers for trying to prevent theft, but sometimes they
just push too far outside the established media/equipment standards. Few
things alienate the honest consumer more than being expected to buy new gear
because Sony, Disney, and others can't stop the guy in China who's making
10,000 bootleg copys.
My rant is complete, the soapbox is now available
