Thought initilally of a few:
Olympus D-565
Stylus 400
Canon s400
Any suggestions?
Try a Pentax Optio 450 ($700) or 550 ($900). Depending on how thick your
wallet is.

Both the Stylus S400 and the Canon S400 are great.
Someone mentioned a Pentax 450, Sony P series, and an HP 945
Here's my input.
First of all cancel out the HP not only does HP have quite a low reliability
rating (according to Consumer Reports) but the 945 uses AA batteries. Sure
it says Lithium on the box- but they're not rechargeable. Any of the above
cameras will have better features on it as well.
I personally don't like Sony that much because everything is proprietary. If
you decide to get an AC adaptor it must be a Sony because of the way they
design the input. Sony meory sticks are a little more costly as well and
they dont offer the high capacities that other cards do.. The S400 for
example uses a CF card which can use card sizes up to 4GB (which Lexar just
introduced) - not to mention the high speeds that CF cards obtain (up to
9MB/s minum write on Ultra II cards)
You also want to take note of Canon's Stitch Assist mode. It is one of the
best in the industry for wide angle shots (take as many as you want and
stitch seamlessly together) The other two cameras have outstanding features
as well though- You'll have to decide which is more important.
The portability of the S400 and Stylus400 are big pluses. You dont have that
with the Pentax 450.
The Olympus 400 is weatherproof (notice I didint say waterproof) You can
pour a ptcher of water on it while it is on and will be safe. The hot
feature of the Pentax450 is little known- the SuperMacro. Macro shots of
flowers and bugs and eyes are really great with this camera! no additional
lenses required.
Anyway- that's all Im going to say for now.

Why do you say the Pentax (Optio) 450 isn't portable. It fits in a shirt
pocket with plenty of room to spare.
Have you decided to go with the Pentax?

I have purchased a 450 and am happy with the size (not too small for my
fingers). Also love the quality of the pictures taken so far.
No sure yet about the build quality. Only had camera for 2.5 months.
