Did you try reading the CF card in an external card reader?
If you give up, does formatting restore the card to 'life'?

As for a card reader you don't need to have any expert knowledge
just get a USB 1.1 compatable reader hopefully with multiple
slot types for if you ever need to read/write other media
types. I got one advertised as 7-in-1 (reads 7 media types)
for like $19.99 at the local electronics shop.
If you want to try and spueeze a little extra speed out of
some media types and you have USB 2.0 on your computer you
can get a USB 2.0 reader for about twice the price I mentioned.

Just one more thought. Do you have another memory card? It is a good idea to
have an extra in case the active one gets full, broken, etc. If you do have
an extra card, try it in the camera. It is possible that the card is OK and
(perish the thought) the camera is broken.
