I personally believe that show two sides to the same coin. I think
the same thing happened in both, Shinji realised his life was worth
living, he chose to reject Complementation and return to reality.

EoE's an alternate ending to NGE. with the main word being alternate.

I don't think it is "alternate" though, not in the sense of say, the
Escaflowne
movie, which is completely in an alternate universe. Episode 25' and 26'
follow
on after episode 24 and I believe that they occur concurrently to episodes
25 and 26.
