Wow! This actually looks pretty damn cool! I must admit...when I first
heard that they were planning to do a Live Action Evangelion movie, I
almost got sick to my stomach. I thought, "Oh, God, please don't ruin
this for me!"

But if they do maybe a Trilogy kind of storyline (which is en vogue
right now), then maybe they could possibly pull it off. Who knows. I'm
just freaking out about this conceptual art. It reminds me of the days
when you could see the Ralph McQuarrie concept art from the Star Wars
trilogy. It just hinted at all of these cool possibilities and teased
the imagination.

YUCK!!!

Clearly the conceptual artists have watched BLADE RUNNER too many times.
"Gee, let's make the future all DARK and everything... It'll be cool.
Uh... Huh-huh..."

And the plug suit on Asuka... let's just say it confirms my worst fears.
Definitely going for the leather look a la X-Men. I can hear the
artists now: "Yeah, that thong outline on her butt will certainly appeal
to the pedophile otakus." And good luck finding an actress who looks
14 and who is built like the gal in that drawing...

Hopefully this project will never get any studio backing.

WETA no baka!!

Wow! Thanks, Taryn. I can't deal with AICN on a daily basis with their
layout, so I usually miss stuff like this. Yeah, it does seem that
they've already started to make some changes in design, but there are
going to have to be some differences in live-action Eva, whether it is
in the holding-tanks or character design.

I have to wonder what WETA is using for source material -- after all, if
they watch the TV series too much, the entire thing might end up looking
somewhat too cartoonish a la X-Men. I would expect that there is someone
working on this concept art based solely on looking at the TV scripts,
as the movie script probably hasn't even been outlined yet. Just my
guess. The comment about Blade Runner I agree with: Eva's world is not a
dark one, and the anime was not film noir, both for good reason; part of
the entire point of the series seems to me to create a world more
beautiful than the one we know.

Some things that seem are going to have to change for live-action:
1) Size of the robots themselves -- as the Eva-FAQ mentions, they
repeateadly change size throughout the series for dramatic effect. This
will not be as possible in live action. Thus, I think, the tank
redesigns seen here make some sense. The Evas are going to be much
harder to make anthropomorphic -- just look at how hard the Ents were to do.
2) Age / appearance of the pilots: if this is to be an American-release
movie, I don't think 14 is going to cut it. 16, maybe. This will also
help with acting. At the same time, this movie can't end up looking like
Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider, as (hopefully) the serious implications
of this series will not be left behind or obscured by juvenile
Maxim-magazine-ism (though by reading other posts here... aargh...).
3) Angel design: the giant blue grain of salt? If anyone can do it, it's
WETA, but...
4) Cartoonish (exaggerated) humor and fanservice. Doesn't work the same
in live action. Also see #2. Asuka's role and personality will be much
harder to establish without these.

Hmm. This post is already getting too long. I leave with the proposal of
a question: which ending / point of view on the ending do you think the
movie should follow?

Oh, right, I should introduce myself, as this is my 2nd post ever on
Usenet (and the first was in comp.linux). I'm 18, male, Christian,
generally conservative, college student, got introduced to Evangelion
and anime in general about 3 months ago by a friend of mine... and now
am hooked (own both Eva movies on DVD, working on SE: Lain among other
things, somewhat considering going to Otakon in August).

Don't praise me too much--I got the link from a friend on a message board. I
can't stand AICN's layout, either. ;)

They cut the spandex. Good enough for me.

Whether they're 14 or 16, most likely they're going to have actors 16 or
older. Most likely young-looking 18 or older. Rarely do teenagers get played
by actors the same age.

I'll agree on the first part (really don't need that kind of anime humor in
a live-action movie) but I'll disagree on Asuka. Asuka's personality is not
a fanservice one. Misato's is. Asuka was /used/ for fanservice, but that's
not her personality. Asuka is agressive and tempermental and madly
over-compensating for her own insecurities. She does have moments of trying
to impress Kaji, but they don't come close to Misato's, which is far more
often.

Movie, without a doubt. I prefer the TV ending, but no producer would ever
even /think/ about doing that at the end of an Eva movie.

I don't think any actor will ever do our sweet little Asuka, Misato and Rei
justice.

Anyone notice in the fifth picture, it is quite stormy, unlike the usually
calm, warm, post-second impact weather.
Just an observation, but could show a darker, stormier soft of setting for
the movie.

Hmm. Now that I think about it a little more, X-men wasn't that bad, but
I've never really read comic books. I actually liked the first one more,
and thought it was more coherent.

You started Eva in your early teens? That must have screwed you up for
life...

More to the point, it's going to be much harder to achieve suspension of
disbelief. Some of the dialogue in the TV series is absolutely
ridiculous when uttered by actual human beings; I'm thinking
specifically of "Asuka Strikes!" when she's first introduced, having
almost fallen out of my chair when she makes her comment about how she's
grown. Not to mention all of the cast's ruminations on existence (which
is NOT ridiculous by any means). Also, I had always thought of the age
of 14 as being more symbolic of the state of these children rather than
realistic, so I always considered it flexible.

As for the fanservice (wtf is that term supposed to mean exactly
anyway?), the line between beauty and hentai is slightly different and
less obvious in anime than real life, at least to me. I wasn't really
talking about Asuka in particular either. As Jessica Rabbit said, "I'm
not bad... I'm just drawn that way." Also probably why I like the women
of Evangelion more than Hollywood star-types -- they are idealizations
of beauty and Hollywood types aren't any more real than cartoons anyway.

Perhaps I've already said too much. I don't really want to start
examining the psychology of attraction right now.

I've thought of a few more things:
1) Music -- I can't see this being recycled, no matter how good or
appropriate it is.
2) Do we even know yet whether this is going to be an American or
Japanese movie? ADV's involvement suggests an English-speaking presence.
3) Kind of like how Wolverine lost the yellow tights for leather, Rei
might have to lose the blue hair and red eyes to look halfway human. Not
to mention Gendo's Mickey Mouse gloves...
4) I have no more faith in GAINAX after seeing these *officially
licensed* products:
<a
href="http://www.gainax.co.jp/shop/goods/index-e.html">http://www.gainax.co.jp/shop/goods/index-e.html</a>
but this stuff wouldn't fly as tie-ins with a PG-13 movie in the US
anyway. I'm sure this is old news.
5) Can anyone translate the Japanese in the concept art of Asuka?
6) What's a _reformed_ atheist?

Well, I'm in a family of comic book fans (and general geeks) and we all love
the X-Men movies. ^_^ Although I'll admit that I thought the second was even
better. But that may be because Nightcrawler is my all-time favorite X-Men
character, and one of my favorite characters ever. But I'm not getting the
"cartoony" feeling you seem to be getting.

Not only that, I infected about four others my age at the same time. My best
friend /does/ insist that it's messed with my brain, but I think I'm
alright. ^_~

That's a wonderful, classic line, too. I'm getting what I'm saying, but not
agreeing. At least with Misato and Asuka, they're attractiveness is
too...flaunted. Definitely on the fanservice side than on a more artistic
idealization, IMO. Although I might be willing to concede a more artistic
beauty in Rei. Although we see her naked, it's not in the same raunchy kind
of fanservice way. But I'm shutting up before I start encouraging the
Rei-fantasizers. *MAJOR sigh*

Definitely not.

It seems to ME like we're getting an American movie.

I wouldn't mind seeing it go. The blue hair and red eyes would just look
/scary/ in real life. But keep the pale ivory skin. Gendo's gloves are /so/
going leather. ^_~

I'd be curious as well.

Why either? Maybe something new? As the movies and better fanfics have shown
the whole Eva experience is fairly flexable.

Agreed. Yeah they screwed the continuity and character relationships all up
from the comic, but by itself it was a good movie.

I think the keeping the Classical music during the battle sceens could be
good. Most of the rest would'nt cut it in a live film.

Has it been said anywhere that it's intended to be PG13? More high profile
movie's with R rating are being released in the States Now-a-days. The added
flexability that an R rating allows could make for a much better film.
Probly hurt the merchandising potental a lot though.

Yeah... my best friend said that I must enjoy torture to watch the
series through for a second time... and he gave me the disks in the
first place. That was a month ago, and I'm about ready for round 3 now.

> Rei-fantasizers. *MAJOR sigh*

Agreed.

On to the new stuff:

I was going around the forums at http://www.evangelion.tv and came
across this link to the original page from Japanese NEWTYPE magazine:

http://www.ag.wakwak.com/~lay/img-box/img20030608102137.jpg

It looks like the concept art was included as part of a larger article
on the "Revival of Evangelion" going on right now. Now THAT text could
be interesting.

On the other hand, the July issue of English NEWTYPE will also be
running a preview. I will scan it in if I pick up a copy... should just
be coming out in stores now.

I was also poking around GAINAX, ADV Films, and WETA's sites to see if I
could find out how much money they have in the bank and guess at the
budget of this movie, but no luck.
