Just incidentally, for the record, I clicked on the link and saw an ad
for Anime Explosion! a book about anime. The ad itself was poorly
written (the questions at the top are _supposed_ to be facetious, I
believe) but the book itself isn't bad. I used to page through it when
I worked at a college bookstore (the manager liked anime and ordered
books on it frequently).
All I'm saying is don't let the association to this thread make you
think there's something necessarily wrong (or even overly right) with

Pertinent to the NG I post to, the book has a particularly interesting
essay on Utena, "Utena: Giri/Ninjo and the Triumph of Conservatism in
Pop Culture." It's not an essay I particularly agree with, but it is
thought-provoking essay, and curious Utena fans might want to take a
look at it if they ever get the chance (if nothing else to bring up
some fun and interesting issues to debate). By any chance, have any
other Utena fans read it?

According to the physicists in the USA and Austria who have come
up with a new, improved
solution to this dastardly challenge of probing without interacting,
the answer is 'yes'. The 'superbomb' conundrum
above was posed in 1993, by physicists A. Elitzur and L. Vaidman, to
illustrate the problem of 'interaction-free'
measurements. It is a restatement of the old quantum-theory chestnut:
the observer and the observed are inextricably
linked. Elitzur and Vaidman proposed that, far from foiling attempts
at interaction-free measurement, quantum theory
makes them possible. Conventional thinking says that, if you want to
inspect the bombs, there's no option but to
bounce at least one photon off them. Yet according to quantum theory,
because light is both wave and particle,
a photon can have a ghostly influence on itself. A beam of light that
is split in two and then recombined by a system
of mirrors will generate interference effects - even if only one
photon passes through the apparatus at a time. Elitzur
and Vaidman showed that, because of this 'self-interference', a primed
superbomb could be detected with a one in two chance
even without the photon actually striking it. This is all very well as
far as it goes - but the option of being blown
up in half of the measurements is none too attractive. Now Paul Kwiat
from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in
New Mexico, and colleagues, have improved the odds from one in two to
almost one in four. As they explain in Physical
Review Letters(1) they have improved on Elitzur and Vaidman's
solution, with the help of another strange quantum-mechanical
effect: the 'quantum Zeno effect'. This trick is named after Zeno, the
Greek philosopher of the fourth century BC renowned
for his relish of paradoxes. His take on the 'measurement problem' has
entered folklore as the adage that 'a watched
pot never boils'. In the quantum world, this can acquire some truth:
in some situations, repeated measurements made
on a quantum system can prevent it from changing its state. This is
the quantum Zeno effect. It operates even if the
interaction between the probe and the system is extremely weak. The
interaction can then be inferred from the
invariance of the system. The effect holds even in the case of
vanishingly small interaction strengths, if the
measurements are made often enough. Now, Kwiat and colleagues report
that, with just six such measurements,
a single photon of laser light could detect a particular quantum
system two times out of three without being
absorbed. By combining Elitzur and Vaidman's beam-splitting
arrangement with an arrangement of polarizing filters to

I *own* that book and that particular essay is one of my favorites. I
actually found it quite useful outside of anime. I'm working on a
book about Survivor and found the point about pop culture being
conservative (in the sense that popular culture successes tend to
confirm what the society believes most deeply about itself, for good
or ill) very useful in understanding the success of Survivor, Big
Brother, and other "reality" TV shows.
BTW, the dynamic between giri and ninjo seems to be reversed between
the TV series and the movie. The TV series shows what happens when
duty is ignored and self-expression indulged, whereas the movie shows
what happens when duty is allowed to stifle self-expression. DQ?

abusive language on our posts - simply because they're out there for
*every*one to read. I have quite the mouth, let me tell you, but I

it, 2) there's no need. I'm just glad afu was my introduction to NG's
& it's the only one I'm a part of. The abusive language and rampant

person and he went away. There are some really honest-to-Dios nice

Well, first keep in mind I read that article--and quickly--at least 6
months ago and have no access to it now.
That said, what I do remember is that I largely disagreed with the
article--largely because the article states that Utena failed. (It
seems to me the author seems to have watched the series through only
once--because his comments about UTena throughout the book seem to
jump to some odd conclusions). I don't think Utena failed--I think she
succeeded, even if she we last see her lying exhausted and wounded on
a ledge (and IMO she is NOT pummelled by the Swords--if you watch the
cut to the panoramic view of the swords destroying the arena, the
swords clearly leave the ledge she is lying on intact). I also think
the revelation that "I can't be your Prince" was not a failure or
indicative of her bowing to the conservative idea that girls can't be
princes--it's more that she has finally, if reluctantly, entered the
reality where princes do not exist, male or female, in the article.
Utena rescued Anthy precisely because she _wasn't_ her Prince--she was
her friend. If Anthy continued to have a Prince--an impossible Ideal
to cling to for strength--she never would have been able to rely on
the personal strength required to "break out of" her own shell and
leave Ohtori (the person and the place). It's Utena's example of
strength and determination that gives this to Anthy, not her
"princeliness." (And just so--it's the "strength" and "nobility" that
Dios tells Utena to hold onto that carries her through to the end--and
they are real character traits she had before she met Dios, before she
decided to become a prince. She had forgotten it was those traits that
set her apart, not some arbitrary label like "prince.")
I do think, though, as you say, with the Movie's ending, certainly the
triumph of personal values and expression over social expectation/duty
is at least a much clearer theme--and IIRC Ikuhara has said that this
was a key aspect of the movie (can't remember the URL, but it's linked
to at http://www.utenatv.com).
