Gendou is just misunderstood!
consider: he is very unselfish because:

If he had told Shinji about the destiny that awaited him, this wouldve
influenced humanities path the way he wanted it to. imagine this:

G: Hey Shinji, I am proud of you, I am about to tell you the destiny of
yourself and the secrets of unit one, and what you must do.

S: -_- <he is proud of me?>

so basically he couldve manipulated Shinji into choosing either evolution or
destruction, but he didn't!
he's misunderstood.

I'm kinda with you on this - the guy had some SERIOUS morality
problems, but I'm positive he meant what he said in EoE - he loved
Shinji, but he didn't feel he could ever do anything but hurt him.

...soooo, instead he manipulated everyone possible, disregarded any morality
in his actions, as long as he got what he wanted? Yeah, a great guy.

And I never take stuff like his pity-speech in EoE as any redemption.
Actions speak louder than words. Doesn't make him any better in my eyes.

What pity speech? I thought it was pretty damning, I took no notice of the
thing, it was like, "meh" and then get head bited.

(by the way, I dont necessarily subscribe to the idea that he's a good
person or anything, I just brought it up for conversation purposes)

Well, that wasn't exactly part of the plan. ^_~ His whole plan was ruined as
soon as Rei went, "Screw you."

If anybody's motives could have been seen as benevolent, it would have to be
Seele's. I think they took pity on humanity for it's shortcomings, and
wanted to end the misery by causing the third impact.
In my opinion, Gendou was out to get Yui back no matter what the cost,
period. Yui was the only person who ever actually loved him (other than
possibly Shinji), and I think in a twisted way, he actually felt that the
world owed it to him to let him have her back. A very disturbed man.

There was a fanfic that had Gendo not sending Shinji away after the
"Yui incident", but got him involved with his plan. I can't remember
what it's called.

(Has an immediate mental image of Rei giving control of
Instrumentality to PenPen.

Contemplates the end result of millions of years of human
biological and social evolution and development being a
total focus on the care, feeding, and hugging of penguins.)

(Starts flashing on what would happen if Rei gave control
to OTHER characters.

Maya: Wouldn't care as long as Sempai felt for her what
she feels for Sempai.

Ritsuko: We'd all be Vulcans.

Asuka: God help us.

Misato: This actually would be pretty interesting. It appears
the person in Control tries to fix the problems they see with
the human condition. So Shinji eliminates the Hedgehog
Dilemnia by eliminating all the barriers between humans.

But Misato doesn't have THAT problem, she has others. Her
conflicted feelings about her father, her inability to
commit to Kaji romantically, her self-destructiveness... I
suspect the Brave New World Misato would create would be
VERY different indeed from what we've got now. Or possibly
could even imagine.)
