I have recently tried to use a product called VETOMAIL. You get a30 day free
trial and it appears to work well.
Cant quite remember how much it is to use after that though.
There was one issue though, I have been getting those shitty Microsoft bug
fix messages by the hundred and each one containes the w32.swen virus. So to
stop that I prevented all attachment downloads into my Outlook Express
Inbox. On using the Veto mail it bypassed the filter and proceeds to
download the mail (and virus) and my antivirus software reminds me every 2
mins that I have a virus in my quarantine. Swings and roundabouts for me
really but overall it did what it said!!

saying that spam I'd reported was not accepted because it's below the
bar.

And while I was uploading this, two huge Microsoft spamages came in,
with "X-Spam-Status: No, hits=4.1" and "X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-3.7" in
the headers. That's well below the set limit, so I can't even report
them.
I fail to be impressed with this basic spam filter.

I think the GOL spam filter is just SpamAssassin where each user
can set her own spam threshold, isn't it?
SpamAssassin has been great for me; it drastically cuts back on
the amount of crap I get. Sure, some stuff sneaks through but
it's a lot better than it was.
(I still have a problem with SpamAssassin in that it flags most
Japanese email as spam. I think it sees things like $B$\$T$R etc.
and thinks that there are too many capital letters.)

I decided in the end that the only way to control the huge number of
spams I get was to control the whole thing myself. So now I use a Linux
server with Spam Assassin and Amavis to catch spams and viruses. I was
back in the UK for two and a half weeks over xmas during which time it
caught 2000 messages which I didn't need to see. Spams are automatically
put into an IMAP folder called spam and I glance through it now and
again to see if anything has been caught by accident. Very rarely has.

This is adjustable if you have control over the filters. Looking at my
customised rules in local.cf I can see:
score HEADER_8BITS 0
score HTML_COMMENT_8BITS 0
score SUBJ_FULL_OF_8BITS 0
score UPPERCASE_25_50 0
score UPPERCASE_50_75 0
score UPPERCASE_75_100 0
I have a number of Japanese users on my mail server who haven't
complained yet. Mind you, their complaints are probably getting dumped
into the spam bucket ;-)
