Seems we got a call from the local city health officials wanting to
come out
and check on our newest addition. Fortunately I thought they were
telemarketers and hung up after several seconds of non-communication,
unfortunately they called back later and talked with my wife.

Is this normal?

Any cure for a wife going through the "I have to clean every nook and
cranny in the house or they'll think I'm a bad mother" syndrome?
(sheesh
we've got a 3 year old - it's not like he doesn't follow along behind
you
and put things back after you pick them up - I mean he put them there
for a
reason right?)

I don't know if it is "normal", but it is standard practice.

You know, if I had thought back to the very early interest Mommy
Government showed in my offspring, I might not have been so pissed off
when the elementary school told us at what time of the day we should
have our children take a shit. (Yes, I'm serious).

I guess privacy of the home is viewed differently here. And I tolerate
a good deal. I would prefer to think that the school's legitimate
interest in our children ends at the schoolyard gate. But if Japan
wants to think it extends to our genkan door, I won't make too much of
a fuss. But I absolutely draw the goddamned line when it comes to them
wanting a say about what goes on in the family crapper. Is nothing
sacred?

You don't have to let them in your home, by the way. When they came
around to check on my newly compiled .dna archives my wife dealt with
them at the genkan and they never came in. She *did* get quite a shock
when they asked her how long she had been divorced, though. It seems
that the kiddies gaigin dada didn't show up on mommy's juuminhyou and
the state-sanctioned busybodies jumped to conclusions.

Tell her to talk to them at the genkan. The weather is still pleasant
enough during the daytime that one needn't feel awkward about not
asking them in. Remember, they ain't got a warrant, and your home is
YOUR fucking home.

I have no doubt you are, wonder how the wife will take them trying to
tell her when the oldest should have his movements.

I will try this actually. I don`t know if it will work my wife being
my wife will probably be afraid she`ll offend them. Heck if I hadn`t
insisted she not pay the NHK guy she`d have paid him out of guilt.

If I was home I`d insist on it but they`re coming during my normal
work hours and I`m not going to stay home just to screw with the local
beaurocratic busybodies. I get to do that enough when they bring
around the neighborhood folder with all the notices to keep our
garbage inside and covered up till garbage day or the
monkeys/bears/foriegners will get into it.

What's with the NHK? Do they still visit door by door to collect payments /
or monthly fees? I remember they used to assert it was sort of tax and
insist on payment.

Stingier than I'd ever get, my wife never paid them. She often acted gaijin.

As the proud father of a brand new (well, three week old) sprog, I was
rather intrigued by this thread - I'd never heard of it before (and we
have a four year old too).

So, I asked my BYJW, and she says (rough translation) "Yes, but they
don't visit everyone - only the people who might be dodgy."

Well...there are hundreds of things I could say about that - in
relation to fjlij gaigin - but I'll just say: What do you make of
that, then?

What I would guess is that Mad Dan Sprog v. 1.0 went to the scheduled health
check for 3 year-olds, so they didn't have to send anyone around to see if
it had rickets or was taking craps at the scheduled times or whatnot.

Speaking of health checkups, my son's first one in Japan was at about 18
months, IIR. At the time he spoke very little Japanese. The health checkup
included some kind of cognitive development test -- you had to do things
like name as many pictures as you could on an A4 card. The boy naturally
could only name about 5 out of 20, so the health lady was just about set to
flag him as mentally retarded, until I say, well why don't we let him try it
in his first language?

Just a random thought...

If all the kids had a crap at the same time, wouldn't it mess up the
sewer system?

Probably what they`re trying to avoid. Teaching the chillins to crap
scheduled intervals based on their age, name, and location so they do
not overload the sewer system.
