This is a picture I was lucky enough to snap after returning from Saipan in May,
2001. It's a chartered airliner from North Korea.
Neither I nor my ethnic Korean cow orker can fathom why they'd send a chartered
plane to Nagoya. No one ever takes an airplane from the DPRK to Japan unless
there is someone or something extremely important involved, since there is no
passenger service of any kind except for a ship that docks at Niigata a few
times a year. I had never seen an airplane with these markings before, and
unless there's some kind of war or revolution or miraculous thawing in
relations, I doubt I'll ever see one again.

Wow - I'm surprised they could afford the gas. Must have one hell of a VIP.

The government can pretty much afford anything they damn well please, so that's
no doubt who paid the bill. I mean, no one could probably even take hold of the
yoke without the Dear Leader's personal permission anyway.
Oh I've no doubt of that, I just wonder who could be so damn important
to be flown to Japan directly instead of hopping via China, when their
what remains of the airforce can barely get sufficient fuel together for
training flights or chasing away patrolling US electronic surveillance
aircraft operating out of Atsugi or Misawa etc.
And why Nagoya (of all places)?

Beats the hell outa me. Going by raw Korean population estimates I wouldn't be
*as* surprised to see an aircraft like this at, say, Kankuu. But Nagoya? What
the glorious red fuck?
Should I crosspost this to soc.culture.korean and ask them? *g*
A tourist charter plane, it seems...
Hey, cool. Thanks for that.
