i tried posting this a couple of days ago and it never showed up,
so i'm trying again. sorry for the repost.
i just moved to this country and i am looking to buy a cell phone here
in japan, maybe one of those really cheap ones from docomo that they
have....
i was just wondering is this a good choice? why or why not? all the
colorful pamphlets are cool but i'd rather hear from actual users.
i've heard a lot of things about that i-mode service but that's all,
only the supposedly good stuff, anyone have any info on the cons?
thanks!
I find the voice quality of docomo quite annoying. They use half the bandwidth
and there is a lot of clipping. AU is better but I find the most natural
conversations are between two J-Phones.

It depends on what you want to do with it. Do you want to send and receive mail
from everyone in the universe? Do you want to take illicit pictures of whoever?
Or do you just want a *phone*? Depending on your purpose, there's a phone
nowadays that fits you.
IMHO, I-Mode is a worthless bell/whistle. If you wanna Internet, getta damned
Internet. Don't think, besides looking at the odd weather report or whatnot on
the train or whatever, that it serves any useful purpose.
As far as service range, if you're in Tokyo, pretty much any brand or service
will do.

Docomo has a number of interesting services available, but their
reliability has proven to be wanting on numerous occasions when their
service went down due to high traffic, inconveniencing millions at a time
as the country's largest service.
Go for someone with a cheaper service. I am doing perfectly fine with my
six year old J-Phone which is only good for voice communications, and
which I use perhaps five minutes a year. If you want to have a real time
video cell phone, I was told to wait a few months for other companies to
come out with their own models.

Docomo also has some of the prettiest girls or trendy young idols in
their commercials.
