I will be returning to Japan in a few months, and was wondering where I
might obtain an external antenna adapter (dongle) for my Au Sony C413S
mobile phone? I need to be able to use the phone inside a metal building
where the mobile reception is very bad. I can place a small antenna outside
with a coax running inside but must have a way to connect the antenna to the
phone. The RF connector on this phone is one of the smallest I've ever seen.
It looks something like an "RCA" jack but is only about 1.5 mm wide. I have
not seen this sort of accessory for sale in any mobile phone shop I've
visited.

Thanks.

Sounds like the same rf connector the 5000-6000 series Nokia(s) use.

If so its called a FME(female) connector.

I got my pigtail adapter for my Nokia 5180i that is push-on and it does not
interfer with the battery or case from:

www.discountcell.com

Another possible source you might check:

www.antennaspecialists.com

When you get the cable or adapter chances are you'll still need another
adapter to interface to your coax plug. For this I'd went to:

www.rfindustries.com

Chances are your coax uses a Mini UHF (male) if the external antenna is
strictly for 800 MHZ. RFIindustries will not sell in quantities of 1-3,
but if you can't find a source to order just (one), contact and e-mail their
sales rep.
because they will send samples free.

Thanks for the pointers, Josh. In the case of an FME connector, I'm quite
familiar with that "nipple" connector. It is the standard attachment for a
GSM antenna (outside the USA). It is about the same size as a BNC or TNC and
is much larger than the tiny RF jack on the bottom of the phone. I suspect
what I may do is to take the phone to a local US phone shop and compare the
entire connector assembly to the Sony/Qualcomm charger units to see if any
of the chargers fit. If so, then I might be able to order the RF "dongle"
from one of the online places you mentioned (or some others I know) based on
the comperable US model charger.

Sorry Donald!

I was wrong. The Nokia 5000-6000 series phone connector is not an FME
(female).

I still think we are talking about the same thing though, and I still have
been unable to find out what it is called.

I'm really not sure knowing a name for this connector is going to help much.
We would be to only two people in the world that knew it, besides the
engineers that designed the phones that is. The dongles are sold by
phone model and the distributor doesn't know the specs usually
other than what is on the packaging. Asking for a XXX jumper
you'd get asked what phone is it for, not "Oh yes we have it".

On the back of the my Nokia is the female external antenna jack and it looks
like a quarter size version of an RCA audio jack (female) as you described
earlier. Its more like a 1/10 inch in diameter and not 1.5 mm.

If the connector on your Sony is 1/10 inch in diameter (O.D.) with about 1.0
mm
hole for the center conductor, I bet the same cable I got for my Nokia would
fit it.

Cable P/N is MANT 6190 and available from www.discountcell.com

Sorry about mix up.
