If you want to get into animation in general as a writer? This
page has some (slightly depressing) advice on people who want to write
spec scripts for animated feature films:
http://www.wordplayer.com/columns/wp22.Ink.and.Paint.html

Of course, that's mostly about the US animated movie biz. But I
think some of the concepts might transfer to TV as well.

If you can stand to take the really long road:

- Move to Japan and find a job.
- Get an artist or two and form your own "Circle". (Or DIY if your art's
good.)
- Publish an online manga. (This step is helpful but not necessary)
- Create a print version of your manga and sell it at Comiket.
- Pray that a major animation studio sees your circle's work and likes it.

btw, the above is only half in jest... been watching way too much ComiPa.

Well,
1: They're supposed to teach you...
2: There are plenty of ways to animate without being able to draw.

Second question first: yes, America.

First Question: Don Bluth is a former Disney animator who left in the late
'70s with several others to start making animated films of there own, rather
than the "saccarine crap" the House of Mouse was turning out at the time.
"The Secret of NIMH", based on the award-winning novel "Mrs. Frisby and the
Rats of NIMH" by Robert C. O'Brian, was their flagship production, released
in 1982, aginst numerous heavy-hitters at the box-office, particularly
"E.T."
Spielberg, however, was impressed with their work on "NIMH" and hired them
to create "An American Tail". Bluth and Co. have released about a dozen
films since then, the last film they did being "Titan A.E." which tanked at
the box-office, and left them homeless (metaphorically speaking). Last I
heard was they were going to produce films on the 'net. "Nuff said?

Who can forget? Bluth has recently worked on Dragon's Lair 3D for the Big
Three game consoles (PS2, X-Box and GC), with new animation. Dragon's Lair
and Space Ace were the only two games of it's kind released.

IIRC, it was Brad Bird, who worked with Spielberg's Amblimation studio,
which released exactly three titles before being merged into Dreamworks
Animation: An American Tail II, Fievel Goes West; We're Back! A Dinosaur's
Story, and Balto.

Ah! I forgot about the DL 3d. Was it any good?
There were some others by other outfits, not as good. Including one that in
hindsite looked a lot like Lupin (I've never seen that series other than
previews so I'm not sure), which included a awsome car chase/ helicopter
gunship sequence in the sewers of Paris. There were several flight games
that used sprite targets overlaid on a laser disk sequence, and a hoverbike
racing sim called Star Rider( Williams Elecronics) with some amazing CG
tracks run off the laser disk.
Sorry if I'm ratting on, 80's arcade games used to be a hobby of mine.

Have you considered Flash animation or Machina?(using a 3d game engine)
Both could be good creative outlets without as much labor as traditional
animation.
While Flash probly would'nt work well for anime stlye Machina with the
right models could be really sweet.
Really good pieces could conceivably be used to get jobs in the regular
animation industry.

To:
Machina is when you use a 3d Game engine and the level development tools
available to script "movies" . Many modern games come with tools to create
new levels, charector models, and animations. You run your movie like a game
demo mode. The advantage to it is that once your charactors and envionments
are built you can (relativly) easily change their positions, camera angles,
interactions and ect without redrawing the scene.
I haven't heard much about Machina films lately. It looked like it would
be huge for a while during the late Half-Life days. I'll see if I can find
some links to post.
