> Predictions for the final please?
New Zealand vs France, with France pulling an upset over the All-Blacks for
the second straight tournament. (My head actually says the All-Blacks will
take it all but I have enjoyed watching the play of France more than any
other team in this year's tournament.)
Crikey - same prediction as mine. I've loved watching young Michalak.
Australia to bow out by 12-20 and rebuild. I wrote last month "I'll be
happy with a top 4 finish" and I am. This team can't win except by a
fluke, and a 3rd RWC win would be a bit greedy if it wasn't won with a
dash of panache.
England - will lose to the French by less than 10 despite scoring no tries.
France - They deserve it. There is even an "Notre Dame du Rugby" for
chrissakes.
New Zealand - They kinda deserve it too, but rec.sport.rugby.union would
beecome unbearable.

Isn't it already?
I'm thinking in terms of 4 years of nausea.

Much reduced if one simply kill files Bobs and Z.
Am I the only person who actually enjoys Morrissey Breen's posts? He might
be a tad (!) verbose but his posts are articulate and thoughtful, IMO.
I'll be cheering for Wales...............'s Celtic brethren - the French,
well at least the ones from Brittany - if only to piss off one of the local
AETs who's been coming round to my house every weekend to watch the England
games.
I was in 7th heaven for 40 minutes on Sunday evening - but not surprisingly
the boys in red couldn't sustain their momentum. An inspired piece of
substituting (Mike Catt) was the tactical difference, and failure to kick
points was the ultimate difference - Neil Jenkins must have been watching
the game in agony.
Whoever is carrying the games in the UK will be rushing the Wales vs. NZ and
Wales vs. England games straight to DVD/video - probably with some retired
player from the 70's waxing lyrical how the performances auger well for next
year's 6 Nations Championship....I've always admired the Welsh capacity to
take heart from defeat..."it's the moral victory that counts"

I always read them too, but I expect that those who enjoy them are a
minority.

Heehee. Two English walked into the pub Saturday midway through the 1st
half of MWM v Wales and ordered a sandwich. Neither were Rugby fans. I
told them that technically we were closed (which was the case, a dozen
people just watching tv basically) and that at best I'd order a pizza or
bentoman (which we'd already done). But not if they uttered one word in
support of pomgolia. Both of them left, I don't understand why.

Almost anybody who remembers the strong Welsh teams of the past would.
When will those days return?

You are making sandwiches these days?
During the Soccer World Cup I realised the difference between Irish and English.
The English will support an Irish team. Of course the only people the Irish hate
more than the English is the Irish. Bizarre people.
Shame Wales can't do better, their fans are the best sounding of all.

The smaller a place is, the more provincial. Narcissism of minor
differences nado nado. Eg if you aren't confused by the nutters in
northern Ireland you don't understand them.

Greater drinkers and singers. Scottish fans too. Dutch (rugby) fans are
cool too, same can't be said for their football fans though.

There is a possibility that with the revamped Celtic League teams the Welsh
could once again produce enough quality plyers to compete on the
international stage. Having one wizard at fly-half and another out on the
wing just isn't enough these days. Sacking anyone from the 1970's remotely
connected to the Welsh Rugby Union would also help. Frightening statistic
that I remember being bored to death with by some old guy at Pontypridd
Rugby Club on a very wet Saturday afternoon back in 1991 was that there are
(or at least were then) more rugby clubs in England than there were club
rugby players in Wales.
I wonder if they still talk about the 3 lads from London who travelled down
to watch the Llanelli vs. Pontypridd Heineken Cup game only to find out it'd
been canceled the night before due to a waterlogged pitch. We had sooooo
much beer bought for use by sympathetic club members that we had to spend
the night in Cardiff to sleep it off.

The old farts seem to be in the way don't they. Wales would probably
only need a few teams. The Wallabies are selected from only 3
professional franchises - anything below those 3 is amateur or school rugby.

Ahh but many "clubs" are those of villages and quite small and less than
err, vigorous. "Sub-District Church left handed golden oldies leagues"
etc. Not that its purely an English phenomenon. I discovered a club in
Okazaki a few months back. Initially I was amazed I hadn't heard of them
earlier. "So how many players do you have", "oh, only 14?, but...",
"your last game was when?", "well yes the social side of it is important
I guess" etc

beer bought for us perhaps, but beer bought for use makes more sense.

What is the name of the mascot cock they have been dragging round Oz in
a cage?

I think the mascot will be called "Coq Au Vin" if they lose on Sunday - or
Monsieur Cocky if they win!

OTOH, it means fewer top tier clubs with which someone can break in. I
suspect that Wales' supposed breakthrough will go the same way as
Argentina's, Samoa's and Canada's in previous tournaments....straight to
"Do you remember that time when..." territory. The big five will continue to
pull away from the second tier of nations....and the second tier will pull
further away from the third. It shall remain this way until the IRB and
int'l rugby in general in overhauled.

But those three teams are akin to all-star teams and happen to play in the
second best comp in the world (after the Tri-Nations but ahead of the 6
Nations).
It is a good comp, but I dunno how say Queensland, would go up against
say, Munster on a cold soggy afternoon in Limerick.
Even so, the three S12 franchises basically draw almost all of their
players from 2 amateur (though reasonably good quality) club comps. If
Wales is able to keep good grassroots comps feeding a similar number of
full time professional franchises, there is no reason why the national
team shouldn't be competitive. Besides the Kiwis and SAians have more
franchises in the same competition, for fewer RWC wins. (Till next week
at any rate)
I don't know enuff about the Celtic League thingee to state much with
confidence, but I see no reason why Welsh franchises wouldn't come up
against teams of at least the same quality as "Waikato Chiefs" or
"Stormers/Cats/Bulls" etc.

I'm just praying that it doesn't rain on Saturday...
It was a great game though, it could've been anyone's game.
England really had to work for that win and I'm just happy that we(Aussies)
gave them the game of their lives.
Oh well.....there is always 2007!!
Cheers and Congrats to the Poms
