Strolling down the liquor barn aisles today I realised that I know
bugger all about tequila. I have a reasonable stock of everything I'm
likely to need for the hordes at the Rugby World Cup opening party
thingee in the bar tomorrow night - except the frigging tequila.

Which brand(s) should I buy?

When you can't find this one

Any of the premium Jose Cuervo stuff will do. I
like drinking my tequila straight, slow, and along
with some good Mexican food. I kinda like Jose
Cuervo Tequila Gold when I don't have anything
else around the house.

By the time most white people get into the tequila
drinking mode, their taste buds are already shot
anyway. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Some people are known to have an irrational interest in their booze.

Thanks Bryan. I'll have a look for it tomorrow.

There has been a boom in high-dollar and high quality Tequila in recent
years. I'm a fan, but they now cost as much as high-dollar sake!

There is a long-raging debate over whether the "gold" or the clear
(silver) is best. The gold color is a result of aging for a few extra
months in oak (I believe) barrels. Some think this muddles the flavor.
I disagree; I find them smokier and darker, but only a little.

The stock Cuervo has it's fans, I suppose, but it's a bit cloying to my
taste. I prefer something a bit more dry. They make a high-dollar
version, 1800, that is quite good, as well as a Patron which I really
like.

Note, I drink tequila straight and only straight: no salt, no fruit. I
don't slam shots but sip.

Based on what may be available in your area I'd suggest Patron,
Herradura and this week's darling, Cazadores. If these ~$40 bottles
are a bit much, I'd suggest almost any Sauza brand over Cuervo (other
than Patron). Old standby's and very easy to get are Sauza
Commemerativo and Hornitos

Of couse if you're mixing it with coke and 7-up you can drink the cheap
rotgut and it would hardly matter. But you'll know you were drinking
cheap booze the next morning.
