NOT seconded. The site linked is legit and completely unrelated to the troll
post. It's a shame to think that monkeymouse's credibility will be damaged
by this thoughtless troll. *sigh*

...you know, Rob, you *really* could have avoided the kneejerk reaction and
actually check what the site was about.

Just incidentally, for the record, I clicked on the link and saw an ad
for Anime Explosion! a book about anime. The ad itself was poorly
written (the questions at the top are _supposed_ to be facetious, I
believe) but the book itself isn't bad. I used to page through it when
I worked at a college bookstore (the manager liked anime and ordered
books on it frequently).
All I'm saying is don't let the association to this thread make you
think there's something necessarily wrong (or even overly right) with
the book referenced. Here is the publisher's own page on the book:
http://www.stonebridge.com/ANIMEXPLOSION/animeExplosion.html
Pertinent to the NG I post to, the book has a particularly interesting
essay on Utena, "Utena: Giri/Ninjo and the Triumph of Conservatism in
Pop Culture." It's not an essay I particularly agree with, but it is
thought-provoking essay, and curious Utena fans might want to take a
look at it if they ever get the chance (if nothing else to bring up
some fun and interesting issues to debate). By any chance, have any
other Utena fans read it?
Sorry for the cross-post--I won't bother all of y'all anymore. (That
AFU has to put up with me is bad enough ~_^ ^^ )

Well, the point I was making is that posting through Google does not
make you anonymous. So far, the original poster hasn't done anything as
severe as what he/she did in the original post (calling someone names
isn't illegal), so there's no need for me to take further steps.

quantium Physics and beyond
I
Quantium bomb
A quantum bomb at such a magnitude that it collapse all dimensions
around us and is a infinite chain reaction every opposing reaction has
an unseen opposite reaction ( refraction )of light. Wave Length -
Gravity -
Light - mass - Wave Lengths.( THEY ARE ALL INTERCHANGEABLE )"
Over the past century, physicists have unlocked the secrets behind
radio and television, nuclear energy and the power of the sun. Now
they're seeking the ultimate prize: a "theory of everything" that
could reveal a bizarre realm of inter dimensional wormholes and time
warps.
SUCH A THEORY would give us the ability to "read the mind of God,"
says Cambridge cosmologist Stephen Hawking. And in Hawking's opinion,
there's a 50-50 chance that someone will discover the Holy Grail of
physics within the next 20 years.
Beginning in the 1920s, a generation of scientists defined the
small scale universe as a collection of fuzzy phantoms. These
subatomic particles couldn't be precisely located in space and time,
but their interaction could be described in statistical terms. The
equations that describe the gravitational field are completely
different from those for electromagnetism and subatomic interactions.
But one bizarre approach is gaining popularity. It turns out that the
equations of quantum theory can mesh perfectly with the theory of
relativity. Now in the 2003 we know the quantum address of all matter
in
our quantum tunnel.
This article is based on material from "Hyper space" and "Visions" by
Michio Kaku. 12-01-03
-------------------------------------------------------
He apparently emailed this to Art bell and Art read it on the air
to Kaku
last night and Kaku said it was stupid. "That doesn't make any
sense," he said; when Art pressed him further, Kaku said "It's in
defiance of the laws of physics."
I was actually quite impressed by Kaku on last night's show. When he
sticks to actual physics and the history of same, he seems quite
intelligent. He had some interesting things to say about nuclear
reactor accidents and how they happened.

-------but-------------------but------------------but-------------------------
According to the physicists in the USA and Austria who have come
up with a new, improved
solution to this dastardly challenge of probing without interacting,
the answer is 'yes'. The 'superbomb' conundrum
above was posed in 1993, by physicists A. Elitzur and L. Vaidman, to
illustrate the problem of 'interaction-free'
measurements. It is a restatement of the old quantum-theory chestnut:
the observer and the observed are inextricably
linked. Elitzur and Vaidman proposed that, far from foiling attempts
at interaction-free measurement, quantum theory
makes them possible. Conventional thinking says that, if you want to
inspect the bombs, there's no option but to
bounce at least one photon off them. Yet according to quantum theory,
because light is both wave and particle,
a photon can have a ghostly influence on itself. A beam of light that
is split in two and then recombined by a system
of mirrors will generate interference effects - even if only one
photon passes through the apparatus at a time. Elitzur
and Vaidman showed that, because of this 'self-interference', a primed
superbomb could be detected with a one in two chance
even without the photon actually striking it. This is all very well as
far as it goes - but the option of being blown
up in half of the measurements is none too attractive. Now Paul Kwiat
from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in
New Mexico, and colleagues, have improved the odds from one in two to
almost one in four. As they explain in Physical
Review Letters(1) they have improved on Elitzur and Vaidman's
solution, with the help of another strange quantum-mechanical
effect: the 'quantum Zeno effect'. This trick is named after Zeno, the
Greek philosopher of the fourth century BC renowned
for his relish of paradoxes. His take on the 'measurement problem' has
entered folklore as the adage that 'a watched
pot never boils'. In the quantum world, this can acquire some truth:
in some situations, repeated measurements made
on a quantum system can prevent it from changing its state. This is
the quantum Zeno effect. It operates even if the
interaction between the probe and the system is extremely weak. The
interaction can then be inferred from the
invariance of the system. The effect holds even in the case of
vanishingly small interaction strengths, if the
measurements are made often enough. Now, Kwiat and colleagues report
that, with just six such measurements,
a single photon of laser light could detect a particular quantum
system two times out of three without being
absorbed. By combining Elitzur and Vaidman's beam-splitting
arrangement with an arrangement of polarizing filters to
bring about the quantum Zeno effect, the researchers figured that they
could, in principle, make interaction-free
measurements as reliably as they liked. In practice, the limited
number of repeat measurements in their set-up gave
them a hypothetical probability of interaction-free detection of 85
per cent. Experimentally, the efficiency
was a little less - about 74 per cent, or three out of four - because
of losses in the light signal within the apparatus.
But the researchers claim that increasing the number of sequential
measurements to 100 would increase
the practical efficiency to more than 93 per cent. So there is hope
yet for the quantum detective.

Don't tar us all with the same brush!

Maybe not for you, but consider that this crosspost is being crossed to
six groups, not all of which have the slightest interest in what is being
said here. If you really want to discuss all this, by all means do it, but
do it on your own group.
And as for the followups, if you really want to have this thread continue,
then grab them for yourself. If it confuses you or your regulars, tough.
[Followups set to demon.local - hey, they asked for it!]

Hey, you were the one that didn't want the fus to be changed. If you don't
want to be called names...

The idiom is a nautical one, so the answer would be a boat builder.
[Followups set to demon.local]
Not a problem.

It's a piece of shite. But people can post anywhere they like. Of course,
it doesn't mean that they have to be listened to...
He really should subscribe to demon.local so he could understand the
situation here!

I *own* that book and that particular essay is one of my favorites. I
actually found it quite useful outside of anime. I'm working on a
book about Survivor and found the point about pop culture being
conservative (in the sense that popular culture successes tend to
confirm what the society believes most deeply about itself, for good
or ill) very useful in understanding the success of Survivor, Big
Brother, and other "reality" TV shows.
BTW, the dynamic between giri and ninjo seems to be reversed between
the TV series and the movie. The TV series shows what happens when
duty is ignored and self-expression indulged, whereas the movie shows
what happens when duty is allowed to stifle self-expression. DQ?
> Sorry for the cross-post--I won't bother all of y'all anymore.
I've cut the followups down to the two anime groups to which I post
regularly and changed the subject line. Ideally, I should cut it down
to just alt.fan.utena, but I think there are Utena fans on raam who
aren't on snAFU who might have useful things to say, too.

That's true. If those are her online enemies, they should be happy.
Sometimes it's more important to have the right enemies than to have
the right friends.

Well, she didn't, but someone who reads both one of the x-posted anime
groups and demon.local added demon.local to the newsgroups line and
now the Eternal Lost Lurker is engaged in a pissing contest with a
bunch of snarky Brits.

Anyone know what happened to Verthandi? She was one of the people who
got me to read snAFU when I ran a Google search on "Enneagram anime".
She was one of the first people, if not the very first, to do an
Enneagram analysis of anime characters on USENET.

Short buses are for midgets, yellow buses are for the mentally

Dunno. I think she's in grad school at the moment, judging from what her newer
LiveJournal says.

*Not that I am in any way* dissing the whole lot or all members but
I've never seen so much trollage and flaming. We had our one? flame
person and he went away. There are some really honest-to-Dios nice
people on some of these other NG's who've answered questions for me
and truly seem to want to hold discussions or make valuable insights.
But, why do they (the NG's) also get hit so hard with the idiots? Is
it because others play up to them so the threads go on & on, like this
one (as I am aware that I'm posting to ^^;;; )?
I've blocked this thread on my Outlook account. But, of course, thru
google, I can't. And I read what afu'ers write.
Btw - thank you for selecting out the other NG's. *huggles*

That is an interesting thing to consider.
It is also interesting to consider that I am going to bring up some
spoilers for the Utena series and movie.

Well, first keep in mind I read that article--and quickly--at least 6
months ago and have no access to it now.
That said, what I do remember is that I largely disagreed with the
article--largely because the article states that Utena failed. (It
seems to me the author seems to have watched the series through only
once--because his comments about UTena throughout the book seem to
jump to some odd conclusions). I don't think Utena failed--I think she
succeeded, even if she we last see her lying exhausted and wounded on
a ledge (and IMO she is NOT pummelled by the Swords--if you watch the
cut to the panoramic view of the swords destroying the arena, the
swords clearly leave the ledge she is lying on intact). I also think
the revelation that "I can't be your Prince" was not a failure or
indicative of her bowing to the conservative idea that girls can't be
princes--it's more that she has finally, if reluctantly, entered the
reality where princes do not exist, male or female, in the article.
Utena rescued Anthy precisely because she _wasn't_ her Prince--she was
her friend. If Anthy continued to have a Prince--an impossible Ideal
to cling to for strength--she never would have been able to rely on
the personal strength required to "break out of" her own shell and
leave Ohtori (the person and the place). It's Utena's example of
strength and determination that gives this to Anthy, not her
"princeliness." (And just so--it's the "strength" and "nobility" that
Dios tells Utena to hold onto that carries her through to the end--and
they are real character traits she had before she met Dios, before she
decided to become a prince. She had forgotten it was those traits that
set her apart, not some arbitrary label like "prince.")
I do think, though, as you say, with the Movie's ending, certainly the
triumph of personal values and expression over social expectation/duty
is at least a much clearer theme--and IIRC Ikuhara has said that this
was a key aspect of the movie (can't remember the URL, but it's linked
to at http://www.utenatv.com).
