suit is "optional', but the neuro-transmitters that the pilots wear are used
to connect indirectly to the EVA. if they had to connect themselves directly
to the EVA they would have to do it "Matrix style", pretty much connecting a
wire directly to the brain. The pilots have to be able to be removed from
the entry plug quickly, so these neuro transmitters do the job in the
series.

Aside from the color, they look just like the objects that
Rei and Shinji wear. So it's reasonable to assume they're
the same thing.
A tremendous amount of Asuka's sense of self worth and
esteem comes from her being an Eva pilot. It would be
understandable she might desire to wear items that show
everyone she IS a pilot at all times; to her, they would
be badges of honor.
Understandable... and a bit sad...
