I have a Nikon 5700 about three weeks old. I've already returned one 256 MB
Compact Flash card because it became corrupted. It's very frustrating to
take a whole bunch of pictures and then have them crap out when you go to
upload them to the computer. Formatting did not help (in fact, I had to
format it via the computer first) as it crapped out again.

I bought a new card, and also got a replacement for what I thought was the
damaged one. Now one of the new cards is giving me problems. I'm starting
to wonder if it is the camera that is corrupting the card.

Has anyone else had this problem? The data will not download, and the
camera shows me a message that the card is unusable.

Bad manufacturer of cards, maybe?

When you bought the "New" card you bought the same manufacturer??? LOL.

Well besides that the camera /can/ sometimes "corrupt" the card content.

I've had it happen thrice in 4 or 5 months. The first time I figured
it was a bad card as you did. The second and third times I noticed
that I was shutting off the camera while it was processing the image in
some way. Either for a "Quick" preview on the LCD or while it was
writting the file. Yes I know the firmware supposedly waits till the
operation is finished before executing the shutdown request but all
the same... that's what I noticed. so now I always put my 5700 in
manual mode, wait about 3sec and then switch it off. No errors since.

Aditionally I have noticed the same thing with my 880 and 4500...
It's also happened with my C-3040. But not yet on any of my cannons
nor my D1X.

Also perhapps worth notting is that I've only tried 2 CF makers.

Hagiwara [HG] and ADTEC

In sizes 512mb and under.

I have used Sandisk and Lexar CF devices in my 2500, 990 and 5700 for
years now. The 5700 has logged over 2500 pics mostly in fine pic
quality setting and some of the other quality settings as well. The
990 has taken over 3500 pics as well. In addition to the CF cards that
came with the cameras, they are all 256 MB.

It could be the 5700, but I would bet on the CF cards as the problem.

What Mfgr CF card are you using?

PS I can't spell worth crap, as you can probably see above, so no
comments to that fact are needed.
