Hmm. So if Gendo sticking his had into Rei constituted the forbidden joining

Well the joining of Adam and Lilith was only the first part wasn't it. Eva
was used to facilitate the bridge between Shinji and Adam/Lilith, or Giant
Rei as some like to call her, so that Shinji could make his choice where
the future of mankind is concerned.

Alright, but why then does Third Impact proper happen right after the Eva
series stab themselves with their Spears? Are they just releasing the required
energy?

Well my first thought is that SEELE is into a lot of ritual methods and so
forth and as the MP's were constructed and programmed by them they to
would follow such a course. The death of the MP's may be the required
release of energy but I doubt that. At most I would suspect they help
construct the Anti-ATF and Adam/Lilith would provide the energy as well as
the main trust where the Anti-ATF is concerned but don't quote me on this.
I'm sure someone has a better idea of what was said in EoE and so forth. I
can't quite remember where Maya said the Anti-ATF was originating. Anyone
wanna help?
