Who on earth said we dislike American culture?
We love American culture.
You are mistaking personal animosity, because you're a wanker, for generic

You're mistaking hate for pity. Easily done - the words do have the same
number of letters, after all.
American culture? When I can find some I'll give you my comments on it.
I'm presuming we're talking about the USA here and not Canada, or Central

"American culture" is an oxymoron.
We don't hate America - we just recognise her for what she is - a big, fat,
rich, immature bully.
When America grows up she will understand (we hope).
The Superman mantra of "Truth, Justice and the American Way" is as ephemeral
as it is nonsensical (as a little kid I wondered why the great "American
Way" would need an alien to defend it ...)

Yes, but you'll have to cut us just a bit of slack as we happen to
come by those traits honestly. We learned them from our British
forebears, back when they were the world's premiere big, fat, rich,
(the immature is arguable) bully.

It's also redundant or oxymoronic or one of those other big words I
never really learned the meaning of.
And upon what do you base these conclusions?
(Quick, close the gates, the trolls are back!)
Well, he had a shot or two at me but so far hasn't succeeded.
Okay, so the British Londoner television chef Jamie Oliver is on
American television, and certain local London slangs are explained to
the American audience beforehand, as would be expected. Afterwards,
however, basic words such as "texture" and "extraordinary" are
explained to the adult audience as if they are school children. I
could not imagine this as necessary anywhere is Western Europe or any
other English speaking nation. The United States is a country
fragmented into little pockets of ignorance, and this is why that type
of communication is necessary. This is my own main criticism of United
States culture.
I personally have never resented nations with more military strength.
British short and ugly? I wouldn't know where to begin with this one.
Bullies? The main thing which keeps Britain free is that the British
cannot ever be bothered oppressing one another. That's why there has
never been a single lasting political revolution on this island since
history began. Totalitarian? You're going to have to be more specific
but just about everyone who has made such claims had never an idea
what they were discussing and ran along the lines or "YOUR COMMIE
QUEEN DOESNT LET YOU SUE HOSPITALS BECAUSE THE BBC FORBIDS IT" and so
on.

Proof that teh British are freer:
One little known English law is that it is quite legal to shoot any
Scottish man with a bow and arrow found within sight of the city walls
of York after dark.
I don't think the USA has such a law.

In North Korea, you are free to criticise the PotUS anywhere without
restriction. Freedom of speech in this field does not exist in today's
USA. Whetehr this means Korea has a better thing going or not, I leave

Nah, we only get to shoot-n-kill home intruders.
Oh - *those* Indians.
A W-S
They came as a great relief to the doctors of the day.
In the mid-nineteenth century there was a positive epidemic of 'hysteria'
amongst middle and upper class women with almost 70% of women
Among the symptoms were 'irritability' 'persistent erotic fantasy' and
'excessive vaginal lubrication'.
Prior to the invention of machines such as the above the treatment had to be
administered er... by hand, as it were.
Some doctors complained that it could take 'up to an hour' to produce the
desired 'crisis of fever' which thus enabled the unfortunate victim some
respite from her symptoms.
Unfortunately 'hysteria' was diagnosed as chronic and incurable and patients
would be forced to return often for further treatment sessions.
[I'm not making this up]
The advent of the steam-powered mechanised treatment beds proved a boon to
the doctors as they could now treat a patient every 10 minutes or so and
therefore greatly increase their turnover and revenues. The machines were
not available to the general public.
Some went so far as to have multiple treatment rooms with a row of up to
five patients being treated, conveyor belt style, in a small hospital ward.
(I still struggle with that fearsome image)
It being the case that middle and upper class Victorian era women were not
deemed to be sexual beings by the arch-patriarchal society - the idea that
the treatment was in any way sexual apparently didn't occur to the (male
middle and upper class ) doctors.
(Well so all the sources say)
It wasn't until the early 20th century when the first portable electrically
powered versions (still enormous and resembling meat grinders by the way)
went on public sale and began to feature in the first pornographic films
that the penny seems to have dropped.
The electric vibrator was only the fifth household, er... tool, to be
electrified - it came after the toaster but before the vacuum-cleaner. Those
Victorian gals certainly had their priorities sorted. They were advertised
in needlecraft magazines primarily.
Between 1910 and 1920 the medical profession quietly dropped the treatment
from their repertoire, though diagnosis under the rubric of 'hysteria' was
not outlawed in Scotland until 1952.
So now you know.

Ah! I was meaning to ask about that - I take it that law was indeed passed
then?
I heard about it's progress a few years ago but it was being challenged by
various groups at the time.
I thought it rather ironic that the people pressing for them to be made
illegal called themselves ' The People's Council For Civil Liberties' or
something like that.
IIRC several other states were also going the same way?

No-one in this group takes him seriously anyway - those who haven't bothered
to kill-file him yet.

Not that the other kind got one whole hell of a lot better deal from
Whyte-Folkes arriving in ships from Jolly Old England way back when.
Last I heard it had passed. I don't know anything about the results of
any legal challenges. My limited understanding of Alabama
jurisprudence is that one way they forestall challenges to acts of the
legislature being found to violate the state constitution is to
enshrine practically everything in an amendment to the state
constitution. When I heard the news report covering this, several
years ago, their constitution had well over 700 amendments. Not
shabby when you consider that they had started over from scratch a
time or two since the WNA ended.
Yes well us First People once had houses as well.
Then all you Europeans came, shot us and the kids, and took our homes.
It's been the woods ever since.
Because only one of the ten would work at any one time.
And to answer your next question, there are many more pleasure points than
one.
I'd never have learnt things like this on SCI !!

Oh, they'll recover from the vapors after they have a refreshing "tea"
of heavily-diluted Earl Grey and cucumber sandwiches with the crusts
cut off.
BTW: Just how did we end up with fj.life.in-japan in here?
Mud-plastered birchbark teepees do NOT qualify as "houses".
Well, of COURSE not - the Ersh still don't know about s*x.
Home is where you hang your hat...
Oh, wait! We didn't have hats either.
Never mind. ~(:-0
We've got a double-deported Irishman here in fj.life.in-japan, so I
can well imagine. Our guy was first thrown down amongst the platypus
molesters in Austria. After a while they wised up and tossed his ass
out. Japan has him now. Lucky us. I've always had the good sense not
to get within arm's reach of him myself.
I love a lot of American culture. I like a lot more.
Some of my best friiends are American.
Last week I had a fantastic time watching the TV series '24'.
The question in this thread title is misguided.
Some British people don't like some aspects of American culture. That
probably has more to do with their own attitide to life (and indeed to the
way they experience the world) than with America itself.
In other words, those people are miserable, complaining communist
bastards.
Thank you ladies and gentlemen for your attention.

Nonsense. I am certain the US government doesn't care a fig if you shoot
a Scottish man with a bow and arrow found within sight of the city walls
of York after dark.
In fact, I'm sure it's encouraged by certain political sects.

OOOOOOOOOH, you wanna talk to great-great-great-(x6)-grandpa! No
problem. Coupla bottles of fire-water, and he'll be dancing around your
campfire.

Well, the fire-water will take care of the pissed part.
Mike
Of course they do, why do you think there are so many of them??? You have to
think this stuff through, Duke.
