AFAIK the lyrics are not by Anno, but they are based on a Japanese poem
by Anno. The free translation - or perhaps interpretation - was done by
Mike Wyzgowski, if http://www.avians.net/rkc/reichu/reichu-eva-csd.html
is right.

English by a guy named Mike Wyzgowski.

I'm assuming that was the "Tumbling Down" shit...
the one that says "I wish... that i could turn back time... cause now
the gift is all mine... can't live without the trust from those you
love..." ?
That gets my vote for the most DISTURBING music in a movie, period.
The song itself is good, but juxtaposed w/ what's happening with the
movie at the time... am i alone here? I mean, the song was just so
HAPPY... and...

It isn't. This song is contradicting itself if you compare the lyrics to
the melody. Think about what this contradiction could mean - it's easy.
Note it's at the start of Third Impact.
And I'd vote for "Fly me to the moon". Not because it would not fit,
just because it really goes on one's nerves when playing an OST CD with
shuffle. But that's not in the movie... I'd vote for "tanin no kanshou"
- or "manatsu no shuuen"... or whatever, both are just too similar. At
least they fit to the beginning of the movie. "Taikou e no kinkyuuhinan"
is just too early, but that's probably only my opinion. "Air" is still
IMHO the best example of using classical music as background for a fight
- and one notices the images were drawn to the music. "Munashiki nagare"
is my favourite, but too long (not in the movie, where it's just
background and can be that long). Thanatos - I do not really like that
(the way how is sung), but it perfectly fits at this position (both the
lyrics and the sound fits). "Hajimari e no touhi" - is the "right" place
for putting the "Far in the distance..." lyrics in, but its main purpose
is reminding you of the scene where "tanin no kanshou" was played.
"Heisoku no kakudai" is also excellent at that position, but you must
notice Rei III's theme at the end. Could be a hint to understand the ending,
but I already wrote about it here. "Yume no sukima" - try to find out
what this is a variation of without looking at the score! It's somehow
misleading - it makes you think of Rei I's theme, but the solution is
somewhat completely different: borderline case. Also well done.

I'm so buying the OST when i get the DVD, though.
I always get real depressed when i flip through scenes in EoE, just
because it's over. Why must the japanese be so cruel and limit their
TV shows to 26 episodes...

I forgot to say something about this... I understand that the lyrics
are contradictory to the happy feel of the melody, but that's what's
so creepy about it. Like, the lyrics I mentioned coming as the guys
by the Magi are reunited with their loves, then turned to LCL...
