A 98SE machine patched to current levels was updated from IE55 to IE6, to
accomodate software that required 6. The update was done "custom" from a
local copy of the setup dir. All subsequent Windows Update passes completed
successfully, EXCEPT...

814078 always shows as needing update. Repeated passes merely add
"successful" entries for the same patch to Installed Updates. Strangely,
this is allegedly for Jscript **5.1** for my machine. I'd already gone to
the 5.6 level under IE55. The required .x.x.8513 dll is indeed present, and
was there before this upgrade cycle.

Thoughts?

Yeah, mine is doing the same thing. I installed the 5.6 update first
thinking that would keep the 5.1 update from showing. It did not. So, I
installed the 5.1 version; however, when I went back to the Windows Update
site, it said I needed to install Visual Basic Script support. So the 5.1
update seemed to have killed it. I had to download and install scr56en.exe
to get it restored. I then downloaded js56men.exe from the 814078 info
page.

I think Microsoft just needs to yank the 5.1 update and just keep the 5.6
one. The 5.1 seems to be busted.

Running Windows 98 with IE6 SP1 and all the critical updates up to this one.

I have like 3 successful installations in the History now. Is there some
registry entry or file I can modify to tell Windows that the update has been
applied?

Thanks,
Mark H.

I also had a Couple More come up after I Installed it.
Then I went to the Download Page and saw that the 5.1 is for Other Versions of Windows BUT the Win98 SE Version is for 5.6
Looks like MS has a PLUG UP THEIR Whatsit (Where the Sun Doesn't Shine)
I Just wish to Hell that they would Test a PATCH BEFORE - BEFORE they put it on to the Update site.

Just for the record, I have the same problem.

I upgraded to IE 6 eons ago and have run Windows Update regularly, so
everything was current up to today. Today, Windows Update decided I
needed critical update 814078, so I let it perform the update. After
rebooting, I reran Windows Update, only to find that now two critical
updates (814078 again, MS02-009) and one not-so-critical one (Visual
Basic Scripting) should/could be installed. I selected just the
critical ones, installed them, and rebooted, then reran Windows
Update. Now, only 814078 appeared, which I installed. After
rebooting Windows Update found 814078, MS02-009 (both critical) and VB
Scripting. This time, I tried just installing VB Scripting. That
produced the result that, once again, 814078 was critical and the VB
Scripting didn't appear. So I'm leaving it at that for now.

I see I have jscript.dll in c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (not SYSTEM32), ver.
5.6.0.8513. I tried copying it into SYSTEM32 as well before running
Windows Update, but that didn't fool the program, and 814078 still
showed up in the list of critical updates. I also see that I
downloaded and installed scr56en.exe on 25Sep01. I'm wondering
whether I should repeat the installation, but I'm not too keen on
risking totally screwing up the PC.

Has anybody found a way to end this looping business, short of just
ignoring a critical update?

I also have the same problem with "version 5.6" previously installed
on March 19, 2003 but Update showing I need "version 5.1". Perhaps
there is a clue in that Qfecheck (qfecheck.exe) does *not* show
Q814078 installed although according to

Having the same problem, running Windows 98SE, updated
last week with the 5.6 update, and updated today, 3/26, to
the 5.1 update, I've done it successfully twice today,
it's in my update log, but still shows as needing to be
installed when I run an update scan. I also noticed that
the update I did last week for 5.6 and the one today for
5.1 have the exact same Security update ID, 814078, with
slightly different descriptions, this can't be right since
one is for 5.6 and todays is for 5.1. Someone appears to
have screwed up when adding this critical update to the
update list today.

I've had similar problems. I installed Q 814078--MS
JScript 5.6 successfully on Monday, March 24, without
problems. Then I saw an alert on C/Net about the usual
spoofing/buffer overrun vulnerability and ran Windows
Update to make sure I had the latest patch (I probably
should have looked at Installation History first.)
I've "successfully" installed JScript 5.1 three times
today, but I still get told I need to install it. Every
time I visit Windows Update v4 I get told to install VBS
(MS Visual Basis Scripting, which I'm certain I already
had), and Windows Update won't scan if I ignore that
instruction. <P>My system is Windows 98SE and my Internet
Explorer 6.0 already had SP1 ("About IE" under Help also
lists QQ 313829, 328970, 324929, 810847 and 813951, but
not 814078; I once downloaded Windows Media 9 but declined
its 2nd EULA which offered to install new anti-piracy
software on my computer, so WM9 hasn't so far as I know
been installed. I've uninstalled MS Outlook and Outlook
Express because of security concerns, and use Eudora Pro
5.2 instead.)<P>I've run Scandisk several times, shut down
and rebooted several times and run Norton System Check
once. I have a feeling this is a repeat of last November's
disaster with Q 329414 -- MDAC 2.1, another element that
Windows Update could never detect and kept telling users
to install.

To:
Hi, Lucy. The update-validation logic is incorrect, and shows the
5.1 patch as appropriate for installations already using Windows
Scripting 5.6.

The 5.1 update then installs the 5.1 version of jscript.dll, which
promptly breaks Windows Scripting 5.6 because the DLL-chain
is now invalid due to the wrong version of jscript.dll in the chain.

When returning to the update site, the update-system needs
jscript support -- and the update-system notices that Windows
Scripting for the installed version of MSIE is broken.

The update-system then offers to redownload and reinstall the
scripting update. If the user gives permission, this is
downloaded and applied. This brings back a proper copy of
jscript.dll (as well as the rest of Windows Scripting found in
that auto-download).

However, once the appropriate version of Windows Scripting
is installed and updated and the user gets back to the Windows
Update page -- the incorrect update-validation logic causes a
recommendation for the invalid jscript.dll to be installed all over
again.

The cycle repeats endlessly -- as long as the user continues to
follow the directions and install the 5.1 update. The only fix at
this point in time is to ignore the advice to install the 5.1 update.

Best I can do for now. <tm>

I've been opening up Task Scheduler and deleting the
Windows Critical Update Notification task - it comes back
after the next use of Windows Update to install an
update. If that seems extreme, you could try just
unchecking the enabled box.

1. Do a clean re-install of Windows and then download all of the updates up to

2. Wait for the fix from Microsoft. Hopefully it will come soon, and hopefully

While I still suffer from the fundamental problem of
JScript 5.1 (Q 814078) endlessly asking to be re-installed
on Windows Update, I no longer face the dilemma of re-
installing VBS as instructed or having my "Scan for
Updates" freeze at 0% when I don't reinstall VBS. I think
that Microsoft may have solved at least part of that
problem at the Windows Update end. [It's just barely
conceivable that it was alleviated by my hitting
the "Remove from Installation List" button at the bottom
of the JScript 5.1/Q814078 description on a couple of
visits.] ¶¶ A possible suggestion for those still
suffering from the "Scan for Updates" freezing at 0% might
be this: instead of hitting the green arrow button in the
middle of the screen, instead go to the menu bar on the
left and click "Pick Updates to install". I don't know if
this would make the slightest difference, but it might be
an idea worth trying.

Hi Lucy:

Thanks. That cured the problem of not getting beyond 0 percent. The inability to
get beyond 0 percent began when I, after seeing the scripting message every time
I clicked on Windows Update, selected the option to NOT get the message again
(hope my memory on this is correct). Anyway, after going to your referenced web
page and downloading Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 9X, I can now go all the way
to 100 percent.

After getting to 100 percent, I see that the system is still telling me I need
to download 814078 - even though I have 4 "successful" installations in my
history list.

So, as you suggest, I'll wait until the issue is resolved.

Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.

Hi

Find Jscript.dll in the %WINDIR%\System (usually C:\Windows\System) folder.

Right-click on the file and select "Properties". Select the "Version" tab.

If the file version is 5.x.0.8513, the fix is installed (x can be, 1, 5, or
6)...

This one:

Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 (Windows 9x, Me, NT4) a.k.a. WSH 5.6

with the Registry or Viewers or anything faintly
technical. ¶¶ (1) In Windows 98SE, use the "Find" function

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I eventually
figured out the first part myself (see nearby message),
but didn't know that the suffix "0.8513" signified that
the patch had been installed (presumably successfully).

VBScript and JScript are both part of Windows Script Host (WSH), it is two
different script languages.

To be sure that you have the latest version installed and up to date, the
following should be (re)installed for Win98:

Then, after a boot, you should (re)install the following security patches for
WSH 5.6:

Security Update, February 14, 2002 for WSH 5.6 (vbscript.dll)

Thanks - one other question. Will the fixed patch that is scheduled to be
released on April 2nd include this download? If so, I'll just wait for the
new patch.

Hi again, I have three entries for Jscript.dll.

Windows\System32 is Version 5.6.0.8513

Windows\LastGood\System32 is Version 5.6.0.6626

Windows\LastGood\System32\DLLCache is Version 5.6.0.6626

Should I delete the two older versions?

Thanks

All's well that ends well, and this cluster of problems
seems to be over. Thanks for your information.

But after following your time-consuming advice to verify
my versions by reinstalling Windows Scripting and the two
Security Updates, I now think simple verification could be
done without redundant reinstallations. (I'll try below to
specify simple procedures as clearly and completely to
others whose knowledge is as elementary as mine; I know
that experts could have said it far more concisely and
definitively in their own terms.) However, I may be either
wrong or incomplete, and welcome any corrections or
amplifications.

** ALL OF THE FOLLOWING APPLIES TO WINDOWS 98 SECOND
EDITION ** (and Internet Explorer 6.0); I don't know the
exact details for other OS or IE versions.

¶ To verify the March, 2003, Q814078 patch for
Jscript.dll, which should be version 5.6.0.8513, follow
the method I offered in my message below.

¶ To verify the February, 2002, Q318089 patch for VBScript
(vbs56men.exe) which should be version 5.6.0.7426, use a
similar method, asking "Find" > "Files and Folders" to
find "vbcript.dll" (not just "VBScript" alone). After
right-clicking the icon, click on "Properties" and then
the "Version" tab on the Properties window that should
appear to see the version.

( ¶ Another way to verify the two patches above is
in "System Information" [ Start > Programs > Accessories >
System Tools > System Information, or C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO(\MSINFO32), or
Start > Run > MSINFO32 ]: (1) Expand "Internet Explorer"
in the left-hand explorer bar by clicking on the
plus/minus box. (2) Click on "File Versions".
(3) "jscript.dll" should read 5.6.0.8513; 576 KB; 1/13/03
[or 1 day later or earlier]. (4) "vbscript.dll" should
read 5.6.0.7426; 452 KB; 2/26/02 [=/- 1 day]. )

¶ To verify the February, 2003, Windows Script 5.6 version
[scr56en.exe] patched by the above, use "Find" > "Files
and Folders" to find "cscript" and "wscript" (the
application, not the wscript Help file). After right-
clicking their respective icons and clicking "Properties",
the versions should read 5.6.0.6626. But since this
package of 6-14 files is a year later than the Feb. 2002,
Q318089 patch of VBS, it includes that patched version of
vbscript.exe (5.6.0.7426); so, therefore, I'm not sure
that if you have the former, you'd need to download and
install the latter independently.

¶ If any of these versions are less up-to-date, then go
ahead and (re-)install the relevant patches from the sites
suggested by Thorgeir Bakken below in the order he
suggests.

The WSH package (scr56en.exe) installs over 10 files, and sometimes 3rd party
bad install routines includes older versions of one ore more of those files,
and downgrades them. That is why I recommend installing the WSH package to be
sure all files besides the vbscript.dll/jscript.dll are up to date.

If you unpack the full WSH 5.6 package (scr56en.exe), you will find that the
newest file in it is dated 6. october 2001 (and vbscript.dll has version
5.6.0.6914), so why the download page states "Date Published: 2/21/2003" for
"File Name: scr56en.exe", is beyond my comprehension. So the Q318089 patch was
released after scr56en.exe and contains vbscript.dll with version 5.6.0.7426.

Also note that even if you reapply scr56en.exe (containing the older
vbscript.dll/jscript.dll) after you have installed Q318089 and/or Q814078, it
will not downgrade the vbscript.dll/jscript.dll.

Thanks for your reply. And my apologies for misspelling
your first name (and also to anyone who copied my
misspelt "vbcript.dll").

When I unpack 13 files in scr56en.exe, the VBScript.dll
(Visual Basic Scripting) shows as February 2002 and two
other files (Info and Catalog) as April 2002. The JScript
(Java) file is indeed version 5.6.0.6266, as are the
WScript and CScript files, but the VBScript is 5.6.0.7426.
All the other files are dated June 2001. This is from a
duplicate folder which I opened on my Desktop and which I
don't think has actually been installed, although this
folder has been moved around a bit (out of Windows Update
Setup Files as a folder and in and out of the Recycle bin
as a folder for example.) I don't know enough about how
Windows works, so perhaps these files were also modified
by the updates that updated the working files, or
conceivably they're taking their dates and versions from
the working copies of these files, although it seems a
little unlikely to me.

I would really like to know where you got this scr56en.exe from. If you
download WSH 5.6 (scr56en.exe) from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a8a18f6-249c-4a72-bfcf-fc6af26dc390&DisplayLang=en

it contains the older vbscript.dll v5.6.0.6914 from September 2001.

If I look at the WSH 5.6 that comes with IE6 SP1, in the file SCR56EN.CAB (not
.exe), it contains the updated vbscript.dll v5.6.0.7426.

Correct, after you have downloaded scr56en.exe, the files *inside* scr56en.exe
will never be updated by any additional updates you download/install. And when
you extract the files inside scr56en.exe with /c /t:<some path> or by using
Winzip or something similar, they will not take their dates and versions from
the working copies of these files.

An excellent question to which I don't know the answer.
The folder could have come, I suppose, from the
scr56en.CAB in Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1.
Perhaps what was offered on Windows Update changed over
time (as did the patch offered with Q 814078). Is the
version of scr56en.exe in Windows Update Catalog(ue) the
same as what comes from the URL you cite below?

I have a zipped version (an application rather than a
folder) of scr56.exe in "My Download Files", but because
of my inexpertise, I don't know how to look at what's
inside without installing it onto my system. (I have
WinZIP, but barely understand it.)

Hi

Because it was my answer to Joe (jbmsbink@*nospam*cfl.rr.com) on his question

"Which one of the downloads on that page are you talking about for Windows

98SE?". I gave him the direct link to "explain" which of them he should

That would explain the updated vbscript.dll...

I can't locate scr56en.exe at the Windows Update Catalog at all, and I doubt
that it is placed at Windows Update at all. Microsoft only "pushes" complete
WSH engine upgrades through Internet Explorer upgrades as far as I know (only
security updates on specific WSH DLLs as e.g. jscript.dll goes through Windows
Update).

In Explored, right click on scr56en.exe, and select one of the "Extract to"
menu entries.

Alternatively, you can let scr56en.exe extract itself:

1. Create a folder somewhere, e.g. C:\MyScr56

2. Open Start\Run, and from Explorer, drag scr56en.exe into the Run dialog box
(delete any existing text in the box first!).

Don't run it yet, add the following text behind scr56en.exe (note that is a
space before /c):

/c /t:"C:\MyScr56"

So now you will have the following command in the Run box:

"<some path>\scr56en.exe" /c /t:"C:\MyScr56"

Run it to extract the files to the folder C:\MyScr56.

Hi

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;291360 gives
http://download.microsoft.com/download/winscript56/Install/5.6/W9XNT4Me/EN-US/scr56en.exe

It also contains the old versions of both vbscript.dll and jscript.dll (but if
you install it, it will not downgrade any newer versions of vbscript.dll or
jscript.dll already installed).

I have not as yet attempted to install 814078 because of all of the problems
that were reported with it. If I understand correctly, 814078 should now
work correctly. If that is true, is it necessary to do the other two steps
you mention, ie. WSH 5.6 and the Feb. 14, 2002 security update for WSH 5.6?

In other words, is it now OK to just install 814078 if no attempt had
previously been made?

Thank you,
Nevans

Hi

It would not hurt to install the two other ones first...

Thank you. I'll do it.... after making a backup of my system.... just in
case! Yeah, I know, trying to "err on the side of caution". There have
been times when I haven't done that where afterwards I'd wished that I had!

Thanks for the information - I think I've got it now.

Just to clarify, I'm fairly certain I downloaded and installed
"scr56en.exe" from the link in
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp,
based on Lucy's suggestion of March 27 in this thread.
