I'll start with a repost of my original inquiry, which went ignored the two
times I posted it...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------
I really would like the security tab to return on the properties sheet of my
folders, but cannot figure it out...

I am using the OEM Home version of XP

I have tried the instructions in Q308419 and Q308418, but have had no luck.
There is no "simple file sharing" option in my folder options.

Before you ask, yes I am using NTFS

I ran across Q304040, which says, among other things "Windows XP Home
Edition-based computers always have Simple File Sharing enabled." I refuse
to accept this. Not only are XP home and pro supposedly based on the same
"windows engine" (what we used to call NT kernel), but there is the same
useless "System volume information" folder in the root of my C: drive, which
I can't delete because the security permission needs to be changed. This
tells me that it has to be possible.

There has to be some sort of reg hack or something else that hasn't occured
to me to give me my security tab back.

Anyone else have the same problem...or even better, a solution?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------

Now, on the newsgroup, someone heroically pointed out that, on the home
version, the security tab reappears and works as it should in safe mode.

All this being said, I know there has to be some way to bring the security
tab back in XP home. I'm not talking about so-called "supported" ways, or
what MS wants me to have and not have, I'm talking about what's physically
possible.

When you think about it, all control panel appletts are merely GUI tools for
editing part of the registry. When you tick or untick something in one of
these appletts, what you're probably doing is just changing a registry value
from "1" to "0", or vice versa. When a XP pro user goes into folder options
and unticks "use simple security", he/she is merely changing one single
registry value. There's gotta be a way to find out what that value is.

I cannot adopt the way of thinking that I should be locked out of features
in my OS that are lying dormant there just because I didn't want to spend an
extra $50 on the pro version.

We've established that this is physically possible. Anyone on board to help
me figure out how this can be done?

This will add the setting in folder options. It's an export from Pro.

That functionality isn't exposed on HE. You can however still run cacls. Just be
careful.

As for the on/off registry settings, grab Regmon from www.sysinternals.com
and run in on a Pro machine, while changing the Simple File Sharing setting.
You'll have to wade through the logs of 10,000 registry changes (so _that's_
why Windows is so slow!) but you'll be able to see the setting that is
changed--if it's that simple.

Does XP Home come with the cacls.exe tool? It's a command-line tool for
editing file ACLs.

I've found a workaround to bring back the security tab on xp home:

- download nt 4 Security Configuration Manager
(http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/scm/default.asp
)
- run the .exe and extract the file in a temporary directory
- select the "setup.inf" file and choose "install" context menu
- answer "no" if you are asked to overwrite esent.dll

The security tab is now active
