I don't know how serious or big it is, but I've got a moderately complex
application written in Perl/Tk that drives the sound system for the improv
comedy troupe I'm in.

http://www.lunenburg.org/mrvoice/

It's a Perl/Tk frontend to a MySQL database and MP3 player. Works pretty
well, and it's useful enough that 9 other improv clubs are currently using it.

www.dealer-network.net
AutoPro is a full blown ERP system for auto dealers written entirely
in Perl with a PTk front end. Currently has 128 dealerships using it.

wow ! That looks Serious & big.
do you have any info on the decision process...
why did you(them ?) decide to use perl and specialy Tk in that case ?
? portability, internal Knowledge (or mastering), toolset ...

It is large .... I stopped counting a long time ago, but we have 2 years
into it and well over 500,000 lines of perl.

yup.

It was ported from an online (Perl cgi) application that we wrote - it
turned out to be a bad business decision .... car dealers are a breed apart
and they do some funny things with accounting that they dont really
want the authorites to know about so it was hard to sell them a system
that had their data residing elsewhere.

In order to leverage the investment we had already made, it was decided to
use as much of the existing code as possible. Perl/Tk was perfect for us.
The learning curve was not difficult as we are all Perl programmers. If we
had to learn .net or vb to write the windoze app it would have taken forever.

If we had started the windoze version from scratch, I would never have chosen
Tk. Now, I'm really glad that we did. The ease and speed with which we can
create new features really amazes our users. The knowledge available from this
group and CLPM have been invaluable. If you are planning a project I would
seriously consider a Tk front end.

Cheers,

Cam

thank cameron for this story.

this sound like the kind of things I was expencting for and I don't
know why there is not more story like this one.
Does Perl (or Tk) frighten people ?
are the big application hidden far from us ?

I'm sure this is because of the lack of toys like
Thinks-Builder /Visual Stuff Studio/ Net(cooked)beans
/Eclipse (my code)...
