Hi!

The situation where Marianna gives intercept from torpor has occured
in our playgroup (and ropecon '01) quite frequently - and so just to
be sure:

On Marciana Giovanni, Investigator reads
'Independent: Bleed actions cost Marciana an additional blood. Tap
Marciana and choose a non-Sabbat vampire to allow that vampire to burn
1 blood to get +1 intercept.'

Can you tap Marciana when he is not ready ?
The card text doesn't explicitly say anything about that and there is
no ruling (atleast I think so) that the cards texts cannot be taken
advantage of when the vampire is not ready, but I think it is bit
unintuitive that this investigator could help others when in torpor
(well you never know about those necromaniacs!).

If Marciana indeed could help from torpor she would make efficient and
very cheap non-sabbat rumor mill that can do actions.

Thanks,
Jukka

Yes.

Any special ability on a vampire may be activated ready or torpored,
excluding specific card text.

Correct.

So, by extension, Mariel Lady Thunder could also stop a combat from
torpor?? Presumably, a minion with the Starshell Grenade Launcher
could tap to give a minion -1 intercept??

As a previous poster said, this is very unintuitive and it is a
serious departure from what you, LSJ, have termed the backstory (the
"reality"). Me? I would suggest that we have some sort of rule
stating "no tapping to use abilities while in torpor" or some such.
IMHO

Yes. (card text).

Card text applies as written. If card text doesn't require the minion to
be ready, then the minion need not be ready.

Cryptic Rider can target a vampire in torpor, for example.

It's not my term, actually. Tom Wylie introduced me to that term back
in 1995.

Intuitive or no, it (like the undirected Mehemet action) follows clearly
from the rules/card text.

That would be errata. Unnecessary errata, in this case, IMO.
What would you do for other "active" abilities that do not require
tapping? Alexandra, Alvaro, etc. Or tapping cards that require other
cards? Louvre, etc.

This path gets messy pretty quickly.

*tap tap* *whisper* I think you mean Cryptic Mission, Scott.

heh. Right. No new errata for Cryptic Rider.
Thanks for the correction.

Does this mean that a tapped vampire in torpor can play a superior Cloak the
gathering on another minion?

Cloak the Gathering
The superior ability can be used to aid another minion even while the
modifying vampire is tapped. [RTR 19941109]

Rulebook (6.5.1.):"[a vampire in torpor] can play action modifiers during
his actions"

It's the 'during HIS actions' clause that confuses me.

No.

Action Modifiers/Reactions
* Action modifiers cannot be played by a vampire in torpor unless that vampire
is the acting minion. [RTR 19970306]
