These Ceilidhs are run for the benefit of Switchboard but I haven't been
to one for a while (I was sorry to miss the one which was entertained by
the Pipes of the Lothian and Borders Police). They attract a very wide
range of ages and social classes and lots of folk who wouldn't dream of
going on the commercial scene turn out. It's great. I met one elderly
gent who was almost in tears, saying he never imagined that he would
ever see same-sex couples doing Scottish dancing together in public,
especially in Highland dress; for a lot of Scottish lesbians and gay
men this is a surprisingly emotional thing, it's something they've been
excluded from.
Two people I noticed: one was a black lesbian in full male Highland
dress, kilt, sporran, jacket, the lot. She looked magnificent. And a
guy normally seen in full leathers, who turned up in a leather waistcoat
- and a kilt and boots...
A very Pride sort of occasion, meeting many, many old friends I haven't
seen for a while. Cardinal Thomas Winning, the notorious hater of
homosexuality and defender of Clause 28, recently passed on to his
reward. Wherever he is, I hope the Authorities let him know how much we
enjoyed ourselves.

As one who is descended from the Scottish Highlands (Elgin) on my
mother's side, I thank you for this magnanimous report. I, too, am
greatly touched by your account.
