According to promo for 11:30 a.m. news on KRON (SF), and I'm quoting
here:

"A federal decision clears the way for a ban on gay adoptions."

WTF????

Obviously, because the Religious Reich is fast moving to dismantle all
our rights, as gay citizens. What most confuses me, is why you are at
all surprised, at this point, over such draconic actions.

It's gonna get a lot worse; so your time would be much better spent
figuring out how you're going to survive the holocaust. Moving to
Northern California is the best option, IMO, even if you have to show
up homeless and broke.

It's a rare occasion when a metathesis such as Thracian's "Religious
Reich" carries such ominous wit and sarcasm. It's a phrase that does
far more to capture our opponents than the use of the "religious
right.' When it came right down to it, the "religious right" was never
quite appropriate, although it conveyed what the user and receiver
needed to know. There were too many people who are religious
conservatives, but who held no animosity or bellicosity towards gays
and lesbians, and indeed, supported gay rights. Being lumped together
with the religious reich was unfortunate.

But "Religious Reich" as a metathesis of religious right really does
convey the angst and fervor of those religious icons who hate gays and
have made gays the target of their new-found zeal to persecute someone
"in the name of God." I don't know if this metathesis is Thracian's
novation, but we would all do well, I think, to employ its singularly
emphatic zing at our true and ferocious opponents -- those of the
Religious Reich. Thanks Thracian. But then he adds,

>It's gonna get a lot worse; so your time would be much better spent
>figuring out how you're going to survive the holocaust. Moving to
>Northern California is the best option, IMO, even if you have to show
>up homeless and broke.

First, I wish people would not use "holocaust" so cavalierly. Gays
experienced a holocaust in Nazi Germany, in Stalin's Russia, and Pol
Pot's Cambodia, but none of the American experiences to this day come
close to "holocaust" proportions.

Second, while we do have many enemies, it is equally true that the
number of our friends and those who simply "tolerate" us far and away
exceeds those who would encamp us concentratedly or annihilate us. Any
thoughts of gays being annihilated for any reason in the U.S. isn't
even in the Religious Reich's cards.

Third, the power base of the Religious Reich is about 20-30% of the
general electorate and 40-50% of the Republican Party. This is hardly
a sufficient majority to undertake pogroms of any kind against gays
and lesbians of the kind Thracian is suggesting.

Fourth, not all people of religious persuasion are hostile to gays and
lesbians. The principal religious antagonists are the fanatic
fundamentalists, the kind that Thracian's Religious Reich so
eloquently picks out. We need to be careful not to cast aspersions on
our friends when we lash out against our enemies.

Finally, it is ever wise and prudent to be alert. While tolerance and
approval of gays by most Americans increase politically year after
year, including years in which the AIDS pandemic could have been used
to our peril, we need Thracian's vigilance against the Religious
Reich's desire to make gays and lesbians their new scapegoat. But we
needn't rachet up the rhetoric to a point that makes us look paranoid
or schizophrenic.

That's a lie. Here in Amerika, the majority of heteros are against us
in vital ways that damage our civil freedoms. For most of those that
"tolerate" us, when pushed to answer, wind up siding with the
Religious Reich (which term BTW I did not coin, but acquired from
others, here on Usenet; I don't know *who the originator is).

Another lie. They propagate, through churches, dissemination of
material proposing that we gays should be isolated from the rest of
society, and given a choice to "convert" or be killed in the name of
God. That is their agenda, and they've only gotten slicker these past
five years, in speaking with a velvet tongue (though still forked).

Every Muslim nation without exception, strictly forbids homosexuality.
Correct me, if I'm wrong. This means at least 1/3 of this planet is
homophobic. You only point out the Christian fanatics, which cover
another third of the world, as Catholic nations, particularly Latin
Amerika.

There are many atheists who are anti-gay...and the atheist nations of
the former USSR and present-day China, have been no friends to gay
people.

The Christian Fundies are the atagonists...but they are but the tip of
the iceberg. "Tolerant" heteros are just as likely to vote against gay
rights, in the privacy of the voting booth. In fact, "tolerant" goes
like this: "I have no problem with you being gay; just keep it to
yourself, it really is not natural". This implies all sorts of
repression and persecution allowable under a "tolerant" rule.

>We need to be careful not to cast aspersions on
>our friends when we lash out against our enemies.

Real friends will go out of their way to assure us of their
fidelity...thus making it a no-brainer to avoid lashing out at
"friends". So if you need to "be careful" about hurting your so-called
friends: then you don't really know who your friends are..and you most
likely have no real friend. Beware, for vultures in human form stand
all around us, some even in the guise of lovers.

I am Cerberus guarding the gates. I am Damien the Werewolf.
You may think I'm crazy now, but believe me I shall be appreciated in
the long run.
