Tiscali have ground to a halt today. I thought it was just
coincidental then I had a look at the Tiscali status page:

We are currently experiencing a Denial Of Service attack on our
infrastructure. Tiscali customers can still surf the internet and send
and receive email, but may experience intermittent difficulties when
accessing the Tiscali website. We apologise for any inconvenience and
are working around the clock to get the service back to normal.

Thing is either they've got another problem they aren't telling us
about or the DoS is also affecting other operations - anything that
uses the Internet - mail, news, WWW ...

if it's the same people who took on Cloud 9 I hope they realise that
Tiscali is a completely different matter.

The words: red, flag, bull spring to mind. You really shouldn't say
things like this. A DDOS against even some big players isn't that
difficult - remember this time 2 years ago? Yahoo/CNN/Ebay all taken out
on the same day.

(Thats even if C9 were taken down by a DOS - which isn't certain given
subsequent revelations and actions - see ispreview.co.uk's forums).

They have doctored the service status page in the past.

From the end of November there were various severe problems with
different aspects of their services, until 13th December, and then all
those announcements were replaces with something dated 3rd December,
saying Everything works OK, as if that had been the case all the time
since then.

When I saw that I was very pleased that I had printouts of the various
announcements of problems I am currently suing them for.

Apparently it is now only open to those on Tiscali dial-ups. I don't
think that this is intended to be permanent.

Good luck! Tiscali's news server also seems to be dropping a lot of my
posts...

It's back up:

Tiscali Announcement: Denial of Service Attack Tiscali UK, a
subsidiary of Tiscali, the pan- European Internet communication
company, experienced a denial of service attack over the weekend of
26th and 27th January 2002. Tiscali reacted promptly by putting
together an internal taskforce to resolve the issue. Access to the
Tiscali website was temporarily affected on Saturday but was quickly
restored for Tiscali access customers. As a precautionary measure,
Tiscali has restricted visitor access to its portal. This restriction
is temporary and Tiscali is working hard to ensure that full access
for all visitors to the portal will be restored shortly. Tiscali UK is
in contact with other ISPs and the UK police to investigate the origin
of the attack. Tiscali UK apologise for any inconvenience that may
have been caused.

They (Tiscali) have posted different things on the status page abt the
DDoS within the last few days.

There's a copy of the status page txt at
http://security.the-scream.co.uk/thread/?4092

Packet loss started (being reported by users) on the Saturday morning,
Tiscali said the DDoS started on Friday night.

Tiscali haven't said that the DDoS caused any problems for users
accessing the internet (apart from those who are trying to access
Tiscali 'portal') but there are continuing packet loss problems,
especially noticable on the Tiscali ADSL service :\
