Announce format ruthlessly stolen from Martin :] This is short notice I
know so if you are interested please, please email me asap with
intent, and also any special requirements as I am currently trying to
fix on a venue.

HIS MISSION:

Well its taken him a long time, years even, but hey that is Ents for
you. But we finally get the long promised Entmeet. Leo Breebaart (yes
that is two 'a's and rhymes with draycart appropriately enough) will be
in the country and pausing to make a lightning strike on London for an
afpmeet, possibly incorporating a demonstration of how it is done Dutch
style...

WHERE:

London, venue to be established, but hopefully convenient for a couple
of mainline stations as well as tube.

WHEN:

Friday, October 27th, precise start time also to be established [sigh,
that is lightning strikes for you]

WHO:

Anybody who wants to come spend time with us.

WHAT:

Should you bring? Chocolate, strange candy and fluffy toys, envelopes
all welcome. But mostly yourselves...

HOW:

Please let me know if you're coming, so that I can tot up numbers, I'll
also try to co-ordinate crash space if required so please send
offers/requests to me as well. Especially offers :]

Any further questions, remarks and suggestions, mail them to me as well.
Especially venue suggestions - target area is somewhere along circle
line accessible to Euston and Paddington stations. A venue which would
allow kids for at least early part of the evening may attract bonus
points for the baby sitting challenged.

ttfn,

shouldn't that be _Entmoot_? Or have you not been reading LotR lately? Or is
it a "meet" rather than a "moot" because there is only one Ent present? :-)

Jonathan.

What are these things? I'm new to the newsgroup, and newsgroups in general,
so I just wanted to know what you got up to at these things.... Might just
come along.... :-)

Chris.

Lets reverse this to put the important bit at the top:

>Might just come along.... :-)

Please do. And anyone else reading this who has never been to a meet,
and who is dithering over it or not too sure about it all - please feel
welcome. It is nice to see new faces, it is part of what meets are
about. They are really not just for a handful of regulars - they are
just as much for newbugs. Almost more so :]

It is very helpful if you can drop me a line so as I have an idea about
numbers but not essential. If you have any other questions about
afpmeets, and whether or not they are a Good Thing, or are having a
minor wibble about the wisdom of going please shout!

And look out for the announcement confirming venue:)

Now to the basics:

>What are these things? I'm new to the newsgroup, and newsgroups in general,

Every now and again people get the urge to get together In Real Life.
Maybe just for a drink, maybe for some organised activity. Meets in the
past have included trips to zoos and theme parks, laser quest and art
exhibitions but mostly tend to be simply sociable get togethers based
around pubs or pub/restaurants of an evening. The Dutch have managed to
turn this into quite an art form successfully getting both new and old
people at nearly every event, including furriners. But hey, anything
they can do...

The excuse for this particular meet is Leo's visit. Leo is one of what
is commonly referred to as the L-Space Cabal (ie one of the gang of four
who own the lspace.org domain, aka the teletubbies) and is really really
old - been here since 1992 and so is understandably in dire need of all
the new blood he can get his fangs on... isn't that right Leo?

Sometimes they are large scale events such as the Clarecraft Discworld
Events {CCDE - look at <http://www.clarecraft.com>) which take place
over a weekend (hopefully there will be one in 2001, if we all smile
simultaneously at Elton :), or a fully fledged Discworld Convention
taking place over several days in a hotel (next one planned for August
2002 see <http://www.dwcon.org>). There may also be a second event later
that year, details to be announced.

If you are new to newsgroups in general, you will find the Frequently
Asked Question documents useful (you will get a Clue Fairy mail about
this shortly if you have not received one already:). One of the AFP FAQs
relates to AFPmeets specifically.

You can find them all at :

<http://www.lspace.org/faqs/index.html>

Have a look and see what you think, but in this event you may wish to
start with the AFPMeets FAQ.

You may also like to look at some of the meet reports/information held
by Patrick Dersjant on his AFP meets page

<http://www.ireland.demon.nl/afp/meets/index.html>

Also photographs from many past meets and events, including links to
others, at:

<http://www.tuatha.org/~colm/album/CCEvent00/> (last CCDE)

<http://www.tuatha.org/~colm/album/dwcon98/> (last Con)

<http://www.rumil.de/afp/index.html> (everything :)

<http://hex.lspace.org/karen/ccde99/> (They are mine [g])

These are just a few and some pages link to more.

See you on the 27th...

How about the "old hands"(tm) who've been away for a while and have popped
back in now the flow has gotten below 700 messages per day? <g> [2]

Anyways, you seem to have been a rather welcome addition to the froup since
my ABEND. Glad to see some people "taking the reins" as it were (don't "take
the rains" though, it gets your hair all wet). [3]

Well, brief hiatus from abstaining over, I think I'll go back to my usual
pastime (the more long-term among you may even know what this is - hey! not
that, lurking you dirty ba*ds!!![4])

- Terry (without the P- suffix)

[1] Damn, the footnotes are out of order again!
[2] Which, TTBOMK it was for quite some time.
[3] Not that I have any. [6]
[4] See the FAQ, newbies!!!!! buhahahaha!!!!! [7]
[5] Sorry, Elton. Didn' mean it, honest. [7a]
[6] Well, I do, but it's rather short.
[7] Me, mad? Never!!!!!
[7a] Wanna sausage? Inna bun! [9]
[9] Hey, I think this beats my previous record for footnotes. [10]
[10] It does now! <g>
