Prefer probably IBM or Maxtor. Interested in Automatic Acoustic
Management features. Need the quietest hard drive for this project.

Avoid IBM (bad reliability lately).

Maxtor is quiet. WD too.

Seagate's Barracuda is apparently hte quietest.

If you want the "quietest" drive you need fluid dynamic bearings, and
that means of the two choices you list, Maxtor, but only on some
models--check their Web site for details, but in short the fluid dynamic
models have an L before the last few digits of the model number--don't
confuse that with the L toward the beginning.

Seagate Barracuda IVs are another option, and for the "quietest" in that
product line go 40 gig or below--the larger ones make slightly more
noise.

Yes aviod IBM. I have had a 60GXP and it started whining just a couple of
days after I got it. However, I exchanged it for a WD and it too started
whining (not as much but enough to hear it outside the case) after a few
weeks. Ill take it back tomorrow.

On the quiet side, dont get a Barracuda IV if you plan on stuffing it inside
a QuietPC SilentDrive.

http://www.quietpc.com/silentdrive.html

These things (I have two of them) run VERY hot. I have an IBM 75GXP inside a
SilentDrive heat trapper and it is just as warm as the barracudas which is
NOT inside the drive. All drives are cooled by the same very slow and very
silent intakefan in front.

Maybe you can use a noisier but very cold drive and put it inside a silent
drive enclosure?

The Barracudas are not as quiet as people are saying - WD and 75GXP are so
quiet I cant tell a difference between them and the barracuda IVs I have.
Not that they are noisy, they are just not notisably quieter than the quiet
HD's on the market :)

The Barra wont develop bearing whine tho because its a fluid bearing.

bought a seagate 60GB ATAIV barracuda and it's an incredible
little drive. very quiet - so quiet, that I have to make sure
that the drive is seeking (by looking at the hard drive light).
It also comes in quite the tough case and with no circuitboard
exposed. As far as value is concerned, it's good value.

...and they've been doing their FDB technology longer than
maxtor, so you are getting a more thoroughly tested product - or
so I heard.

So far no prlblems. - knock on wood!

Cal (good luck with your search, you will find seagate awesome -
I will buy from them next time... that's how impressed i am)
