Howdy Leonardo,

Would you by chance be using McAfee AntiVirus? Regardless, I have compiled
a couple threads below. Arrangement is top down, so (if you wish) please
start reading here:

Inbox of Outlook Express
Date: Monday, October 08, 2001 6:51 PM

I receive a message welcoming me to Outlook Express weekly and at the same
time loosing all messages in my Inbox. I'm not sure yet but I think this is
tied to the fact my Win 2000 system is also running McAfee A.V....at least
this issue did not occur until I started running McAfee.

Anybody seen this one and know a fix.

Tnx in advance

With that combination (Win2K and McAffee) the loss of mail is attributable
to the setting to scan all incoming email. Also the update feature has been
incriminated. McAffee has been aware of the problem for months and to date,
has provided no fix. Maybe it's time to find a more responsive AV provider?

Thanks for the help. I have tried for days to get McAfee to respond to my
queries abt this issue with no avail. I think it definitely time to find a
new AV provider.

Date: Friday, October 05, 2001 9:23 AM

Just had something very strange happen. When I opened OE5.5 and downloaded
my mail, all my saved mail in the Inbox went away. I only was left with my
new mail. Then the next time I hit Send/Receive, I got the Welcome to
Outloook Express email that you get by default upon first start up. This
has happened twice in 4 days. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

There is an issue with McCrappy antivirus and outlook express. The only
options right now are use another antiV product, use another email client,
or at the very least create another inbox (ie inbox2) and create a rule to
send all messages into this new folder.

This is not such an easy task for me because I support 80+ users with this
potential problem.

Good luck.

McCrappy (I like that!) tends to delete all messages in the first folder
opened, especially on Win2000, if Email Scan and auto update are turned on.
Anyone who insists on using it should turn off open in the Inbox and keep an
empty folder that they ALWAYS go to first.

Don't store messages in the Inbox. It's the one most apt to lose messages.

If you are using McAfee, especially on Win2000, turn off Email Scan and auto
update.

Even Norton admits that email scanning is unnecessary, in
the last paragraph here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000020716064206

This is what McAfee support had to say about Email Scan:

"You don't have to worry about the e-mail scan as this is a corporate
feature -requiring Outlook 2000 and a mail server such as Exchange
server. Unless you meet the criteria you should make sure that it is
disabled. As long as you have the Download scan and Internet filter
enabled you'll be just fine as these two options effectively checks
anything downloaded -including e-mails. I hope this answers your
question. Remember e-mail scan is for corporate users only".

Thanks! Yes, I was running McAfee, and Win2k. The email scan was
on. Now it's off. Thanks again.

Still don't store messages in the Inbox. OE itself can corrupt that file.

This is very valuable information. Thanks. We also work with Win2000 and
McAfee (I don't know if we use Auto-update, but we will find out) and I have
similar problems. One of them is, that I sometimes receive e-mails, I read
them, go to another message, want to go back to the first and suddenly it's
disappeared!
Another problem is that our e-mail notification tells me a new mail has
arrived, the filtering-log of Outlook Express tells me the message has been
handled, but it never seems to arrive!

Are these problems also related to the McAfee-thing?

Probably, although message rules could cause the latter.

Look at Kizetoni's "McAfee causes messages to disappera" post on 9/26.

He mentioned that it's not Email filter but Internet filter you must turn
off.
I tried this and haven't encountered the problem ever since :)

Good luck.

Hi All,

I was having a problem in OE5.5 with messages suddenly disappearing. Some of
you suggested that it was McAfee causing the problem. They were right, and
they should have many thanx! :o)

After the tip I experimented around and noticed that if one has Internet
Filter (Enable Java & ActiveX filter) option in McAfee's VShield turned on,
it causes troubles in OE. Messages would vanish from a folder, although I
could see that they were not deleted from OE's storage folder - the file
would still have the same size, but apparently OE couldn't read from it. I
went through McAfee's log - nothing there about deleting or moving or....

Problem was solved with turning Internet Filter off. And it would come up
again if I turned Internet Filter on again, so it is 100% McAfee doing it,
maybe in "corporation" with something else - that's why I am stating
following information:

workstations' OS: Danish Win2000 pro, med SP2
Outlook Express: Danish 5.50.4807.1700
McAfee VirusScan v4.5.0.534, virus definitions 4.0.4162, scan engine: 4.1.40
(btw, I have all other options in McAfee turned on, so it was only Internet
Filter doing the trouble)

Thanx for the hint!

Regards,

Zoran

http://chattanooga.net/~scochran/DBXtract.htm

Hi, All,

The same problem was happened in my PC three days ago. Only Inbox of
IE 5.5 was empty suddenly after receiving an email with the E-mail
Scan & Internet Filter turn-on first time in Mcafee VirusScan at that
day. I found the lost inbox.dbx file using RecoverNT. I tried to
restore this dbx file with the help of
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q262/1/18.ASP. But
only this dbx file could not be imported to IE 5.5 while other box
files can be imported without any problem). I think the index of this
dbx file may be damaged.
I tried to use DBXtract to fix it but give it up, as my inbox.dbx file
is over 100MB.

My PC:
OS: Windows NT workstation Spk6a
IE 5.50, 4807, 2300
Mcafee VirusScan V4.5.1, Virus Definitions 4.0.4169, Scan Engine
4.1.50

Who can help me to repair my dbx file ?

Thanks in advance,

Hill

CAREFUL FOLKS !!!!!!!!!!!!! McAfee may have caused "YOUR" problem, BUT
I don't have McAffee.
I had O/E 5.0 and never had a problem-- Had over 1000 eMails in my
"IN BOX". Each time I received a prompt, I went for the update. One
day when I accepted the prompt, It told me there was no further 5.0
updates and I needed to accept O/E 5.5. Being old, first computer,
knew little (and still know little) --- Like a damn fool, I accepted.
A few weeks later, my entire INBOX disappeared, and does so a
couple times a month. I have set up a backup folder and put a copy in
every night, but sometimes it will disappear before I get this
accomplished. ********************************************
****** I ALSO acquired ANOTHER problem with 5.5. IF I receive
anything looong or several eMails in a row, I will get an Illegal
Operation and the "ONLY" choice is click close. Then I have to go to
my ISP's Web Mail, delete the problem, eMail/mails, then re-boot since
my Inbox won't reopen without rebooting!!!!!!!!!!!
