Eindhoven 3.0 / NL 9.0 Codename Geldrop

On Staurday, january 31st, 1998, a detachment of afp-ers and atmd-ers
dropped into Eindhoven for a smallish meet.
It quickly became apparent that the term "smallish" would be applicable
only if one applied the measurements usual in UK-Meets, especially meets
such as the DWCon. Turnout was big, dropout non-existent, AFAIK.

The following dropped in:

TEFKAB
Dr. Vielgut
Eelco
Pieter v.d. Boogard (The Boggart)
Luc (Yocote from #afp)
Muppet
The Michelena
"Wingnut" Jos
Leo
Sierra
Jeroen Burger
Jeroen Metselaar
Tom deM
Adrian Wragg
Cybercat
Don Alfonso
TimT
and, of course, The Roach

The meet started about 1700-ish at the Trafalgar Pub in central
Eindhoven, later to peoceed to other places as well...

Due to the unprecedented size of this meet, it was impossible to keep
tabs upon all conversation topics, so there can be only a small
collection of topics touched and items eaten:

Food brought along included:
Montreal Bagels (Proto-Dwarf Bread?) imported from the very place itself
CCCB (the first ones to show up at a Dutch meet, AFAIR)
CCNuts
Licorice Turtles
Chocolate sprinkles (choco-bananana type.... Ook!)
Chocolate bars filled with strawberry filling (Austrian import)
candy Lego

Topics:

toothpicks
toothpick fights
leisure time activities in NZ
the "How To Eat"-FAQ
ISPs
Food mailing and arrangements for same
Cats
splitting afpmeets into smoking and fancy dress^W^W non-smoking
Hats were tries on
the big split afp / atmd
the question how to continue numbering the meets and how to decide
whether it is an afp or an atmd meet
the history of *VOM* cards
The use, abuse and theft of *VOM* cards in theory and practical
application
French speaking Canananada
the table water phenomenomenon
Drivers
Musicians
Newsfeeds
pure H2O
events in orange tents
Medication
soft drinks
Canananada
Marriages and 'time off' marriages
Buying a house
annoying Michelena
headology
hugging / kissing in RL and on IRC
smoking and the stopping therewith
Immigration in CDN
Understanding languages
ergonomical pens
yet more *VOM* cards
Michelena was photographed ravishing a *VOM* card
Troll dominoes
candy Lego buidlings and fights

Sometime during the evening, food happned in the form of something
oriental (Indian / Indonesian). Sate sticks with pork, chicken and goat
were munched upon by all.

Another agenda item was a reminiscence of the recent Nijmegen meet - the
Eindhoven LaserQuest was visited and found ... different.
For one, while there had been no reservations made for the Nijmegen LQ,
the Nijmegen LQ crew said, 'you'll be on at this and this hour', we had
time to grab another drink and the come back in time to start without
waiting overly long. In Eindhoven, however, things happened inversely. We
showed up in time for the reserved spot, got out entrance tickets
(yellow) and waited. And waited. And waited some more. Eelco went to
inquire. "You'll be on shortly". We waited. And waited. Eelco went to
complain, and at AAlso, thirdly, the Nijmegen LQ seemed more spacious and
was able to produce a better 'shadowrun' atmosphere. While in Eindhoven,
I had the feeling I was running around in an office building with long
and cramped hallways, the Nijmegen one feels more like the Lowlife areas
from Max Headroom. Add to this the fact that the Nijmegen LQ is going
over three floors, with the uppermost being able to shoot at (and be shot
at from) the second one...
Finally, the 'waiting room', a bar with network games, billard tables,
and *lots* of people was literally drowned in noise. A sensible
conversation was nigh impossible.

Huh? What? Oh, the final scores? I think Eelco has them. He wanted to
table it all...

Finally, the long-dreaded, but this time mercifully short(1) quotelist:

"New Zealand, that one horse village ... one horse, lots of sheep"
(Michelena)

"I was driving, I wasn't paying any attention" (Leo)

"Rob's the only person young enough to tolerate me" (Michelena) {*VOM}

On Troll-dominoes (using the candy lego, fit dot to dot) "This is a non-
UK version of Mornington Crescent" (Michelena)

"I'm not gonna eat it, so I might as well do something destructive"
(Adrian)

Jos: "Nijmegen was the first meet with native women" - Michelena: "What
am I? A barbarian?"(2)

"They are not meant to be digested, they are meant to fill your stomach"
(TEFKAB)

"Context, what's that?" (Rob)

"That was before we were datin, long before... at least twelve hours"
(Michelena)

"I had to say something nasty to someone else for a change" (Leo)

(1) As I said, there were too many conversations going on, and other
people will probably add to the list

(2) How about: too late anyway, Michelena?

One of the most international afpmeets we've had so far, I think. German,

I believe Big Al was also planning to come, but had to cancel at the last
moment.

TEFKAB? Huh? Whozzat?

There's no escaping it, Roach: for the next meet, you'll *have* to clone
yourself.

> Montreal Bagels (Proto-Dwarf Bread?) imported from the very place itself

I had never eaten a bagel before, let alone a real Montreal Bagel. It was
an experience I'd gladly repeat (and thanks to Mrs Bill and Michelena for
making it possible), in sharp contrast to the chocolate-covered coffee
beans (truth in advertising isn't all it's cracked up to be: there actually
are coffee beans (yuck!) inside those things).

> candy Lego

Another highlight of the evening, and something else we had to thank
Michelena for. I think visitors to the Trafalgar will be finding lego
bricks in nooks and crannies of the pub furniture for some time to come...

This is why the spontaneously formed A.f.p. Headbangers Choir (with virtual
long hair for some of the more follicly challenged members) gave up on
talking and treated everyone to a rousing ten-minute singalong performance
of "Paradise City" instead.

The sure sign of a Good Meet: when you find yourself quoted in the quote
list afterwards, but for the life of you you have no recollection of when
you said this to whom, or why.

Well, I don't have the scores, but I _do_ have all the kills. People
who are interested are pointed to:

That's where the "They are not meant to be digested, they are meant to
fill your stomach" (TEFKAB) quote came from. It was also my first
encounter with this particular bread product and I'm only sorry that
they're not available in The Netherlands (that I know of).

It should also be noted that one of the kind providers of the Montreal
bagels, Mrs Bill, attended the meet in the form of several photos.

I was the other victim of the aforementioned beans. You'd think someone
might have warned us that there literally were coffee beans inside. A
rational person might ask (as a number of people did) what we had
expected to be in them. All I know is that I didn't expect people to
actually eat coffee beans.

>> candy Lego

The edible Lego was promptly confiscated in an attempt to remove the
unpleasant aftertaste of the chocolate covered coffee beans. What
wonderful afp food; you can build with it, throw it at people, throw it
in glasses of Guiness, and if you run out of ideas, you can even eat it
(although by that time, I'm not sure that you'd want to. :-) According
to Michelena, it's the only candy with a warning label: not suitable for
children under three.

The LazerQuest was indeed different from the Nijmegen one. One good
thing about it was the slits in the wall through which you could,
unobserved, shoot people. However, Michelena's ankle particularly noted
this LQ for its slippery floor. It also caused me to perform the
classic stepped-on-a-bananaskin fall with the end result qualifying me
for the Ten Most Pathetic Things In The Universe thread.

Considering my LazerQuest ranking (i.e., moderately awful), I hereby
unreservedly apologise for my thoughtless and foolish remarks in the
Assassinating Dutchmen thread. *hopeful smile* Forgive me guys? Guys...?

>> Finally, the long-dreaded, but this time mercifully short(1) quotelist:

Adrian (to Leo): How old are you? Thirty?
Leo: Thirty-one.
Adrian: I was kidding.

All in all, a great meet with lots of interesting new people to see and
new hats to try on.

re: bagels.....

Bagels are not very widely available over here in Ireland, but when they are
available in Dublin they are usually supplied by a little bakery called the
Bretzel - a really good Jewish bakery.... so maybe you should check out any
Jewish bakeries in your locality - it's worth a try. I don't know if the
Montreal Bagels are the same as the ones we get over here though!

<grumblemumble>

Here I am, trying to spare the feelings of afpers who were not at the
meet(1), and what happens? Someone else makes it a point to step in for
my omission.

(1) I usually try to do that for people who are not at the meet in
question. People who show up OTOH I consider fair game...

<chop>
while im not a real big coffee drinker i do love chocolate covered coffee beans, and with licorice jelly beans they are even better. even plain coffee beans are good, but you have to get the right roast. french roast
is nasty, but esspresso and columbian rock.

you have to be careful though, a few ounces of them will mess with you in some strange ways.

May I object here. I think I said that about the edible legos, not about
the bagels.
Even if I may *thought* that about the bagels too (which of course I had
not) I could never afford to say such things about kind (dwarf) bread
products brought along by Mitch herself. :-)
And yes, I ate one bagel and filled my stomach with several legos...
and even found out you can also 'lollipop' them and (if you have better
teeth than me) even munch and crunch them!
