What diversity you enjoyed is rapidly slipping away in the S.F.
Bay Area...as you well know, Richard. These are tinier and tinier
pockets of diversity, any more. While it's great to see such a mix
of different skin colors and ethnic types...don't forget that the mix
is less likely to include an equally-diverse blend of economic
classes. This is a trend that started with the original wave of
yuppies, and accelerated with the Dot-Com phenomenon. Much
diversity has been wiped out, including our wonderful, multi-ethnic
dance, theater, arts, poetry, etc. So when you see a mix of skin
colors, it's most likely a group of very affluent folks, with barely a
poor, low-or-even-moderate-income person composing a part of
this mix.

I love this city!

Well, I can enjoy what is here, if I remind myself how much worse
it is in many other places. But that only lasts so long. What gives
me sustenance and joy is my sense of self: my achievements, my
resilience, my persistance through it all...especially the fact I am
still here, a low-income type, being a nasty thorn in the sides of
bigoted elitists.

But do I really "love" this city? Nah, not any more. I do "love" the
memory of what it once was, including the dear friends and lovers
whom I met here, who have since passed on, thanks to the cruelty
of our homophobic society and its consequent denial of care and
quality treatment that accelerated their demise. But I'd say this
outrage I have for the city, is really a comment on Amerikan
society at large, of which San Francisco is but a part. It has
moved rapidly and sharply to the political extreme right, like
everywhere else.

But if an illusion keeps you going, by all means use it. That's how
I manage to refresh myself, whenever I visit Berkeley: I *pretend
it's still the outrageously progressive place it once was; the
memories wash over me like clear spring water, as I stroll or cycle
through its many beautiful neighborhoods. And you never know: I
just may turn out to be *one of the privileged folks who manages
to bring back a true sense of diversity and freedom in the next
cycle of liberal evolution. I am right at the starting gate, eager for
the time it finally opens.

Hopefully, now that most of the "dot com's" have now become "dot bombs",
this will reverse itself to a certain extent, over time.

One can always hope for a major earthquake and economic
collapse of Silicon Valley, which double-tragedy will make living in
San Francisco so undesirable (finally), as to bring expenses
down to 1999 levels! ;)
