I've noticed some LW stuff on DMN that has an explicitly
"Geiger-esque" look to it. Is that effect normally done by
bump/displacement maps or what?

Looks like a tonne of work, whichever.................

hehehe,

very nice pics these, I think my favorite would be

m&/2001/10_oct/features/asylum3d/MEDUSA.SNAKES.jpg (sorry if the url wraps)

ok no, this is my favorite now :-)

I'd say they probably used displacement mapping of some kind for the effect,
or a very steady hand and lots of patience with modeling in subdivision.
LW7's bump displacement could be a great help with something like this,
model the basic shape then use bump displacement to get the fine details,
would be insane to try model them by hand on anything but the simplist
objects, add a dirtied up procedural texture to the rest of it, few more
bump maps, dents being a good one for this sort of style, another bump for
the wiretex (just a scribble of lines works well enough heh). To get the
real Giger look, add lots of skulls, old machines, genitalia, falic symbols,
naked women, occult messages, mix together for a few weeks, add a touch of
sleepless nights and bad dreams.. Instant Giger.. (minus the extra hours of
tweaking in Photoshop to get it just right) ;-)

Btw his artwork seems to have vanished but a guy called Kano used to produce
some fantastic images in the Giger style, using Bryce and its terrain
modeler for the look (bryce works great for the Giger style) they weren't
100% Gigeresque but they still looked wonderful, he could have easily put
them in the Tate and made a small fortune

yeah, I saw those, and wondered how the hell he made a
Gieger-motorcycle with a terrain generator.

once again, the artist, not the tool.

yup, I found an old tutorial once of his on how he did that bike, he made it
look really easy to do. (wasn't in practice though, I tried :-)

cheers Tess, wouldn't have seen the post otherwise

here ya go Deuce, I'm surprised its still on the net, was some time ago now

http://visualmagic.awn.com/html/tutorials/feb98-brycehog.html

woohoo, found where his new site is too, looks to be partially under
construction, but has his old bryce work on it

http://www.polareye.com/k/

only small images, but from what I remember just before his original site
dissapeared he was selling prints, worth buying I'd say

some more of his (larger image)
http://www.artsforge.com/gallery_new/alien_worlds/jac.html

http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/2780/jac1.html

( don't think this one is his, but they look good though
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~vakras/bryce-poser.html

There's also a trick with volumetrics in Bryce 4 from what I remember that
lets you create quick almost giger style images, I can't remember the actual
way of doing it, but it involves using some random texture in the volume and
placing the camera inside... I wonder if it'll work with LW

anyhoo, enjoy :-)
