the night in Bath and get the train down in the early morning.
Anyone south of Tavistock should get *some* time under totality.
However...you'll have to be further south than Truro to get more
than two minutes of totality; and the world and their cousin and
their cousin's cousin are going to be there; I've been examining
the idea of going to Alderney or Fécamp as a slightly more
civilized alternative.
At any rate, the transport links are going to be frantic there;
the train is the only possible answer, and you'd be advised to
book tickets *now*

Some of the hotels around here are now complaining that the event
has been so over hyped with horror stories about the travel etc that
people are having second thoughts. That, plus the extravagant prices
they are charging means that they are still half empty. Tee hee.

AFAIAA you cannot book until three months before. The train booking
systems are a shambles anyway. I frequently have to wait about 15
minutes before I get through the engaged signals. I then have to
wait in a queue for a similar period. You then find that the people
on the other end are singularly unhelpful and incompetent. Sorry if
I've offended anyone who works there, but I have had several
problems. It seems they run more than one booking system and ...
well, I won't go on about it, the bloke trying to sort me a ticket
took hours to explain it and I wasn't the least bit interested, I
just wanted my ticket! - And why don't they have access to the
timetables? You have to know the exact time of the train before
phoning them up! Sorry, time to stop foaming at the mouth now.

of the path of totality? There happens to be a ferry from Newhaven
(re-starting April 25th - allegedly) convenient for London ...etc -
maybe worth exploring possibilites yes/no?

Best bet we've come up with so far is to try and camp somewhere near
Devon and drive down to the South Devon coast in the wee small hours to
avoid too much traffic... I've booked my holiday (Tue/Wed/Thu) but I now
just need some way for us to get to see it.
Just a thought - are there significant numbers of us interested in this
who could travel together?

I am planning to go to France because it will be less crowded, you get
longer in the totality and you aren't near the coast and there is less
chance of cloud. Being in the morning, the eclipse could be ruined by
mist (no, not you).
For those with a 35mm SLR camera I can recommend the eclipse kit that
Jessops Photographic are doing. I tried the solar filter at the
weekend and was impressed with the results and will be more so when I
get a 2x converter that works properly.
