Ok.. I got elected to do the report, and I'm not very good at this
sort of thing, so please bear with me.. I'll try to do it proper,
with footnotes and everything..

It all started, for me anyway, with the very pleasant experience of
making a phonecall, at some impossible hour [3], to get Don Alfonso
(keeper of the sacred cigarette lighter) to meet me at Utrecht
station, to go to Amsterdam. Ok, so it was early... sorry
Fonz... Perhaps I should not have let the pleasure show so much...

Amsterdam, 12:30 nice and sunny. We hijacked a couple of very nice
seats outside Cafe Americain, and ordered coffee.

Amsterdam, 12:35 pissing down. Rob (Collier, the duty Bjorn) and Leo
(the keeper of the APF) appeared. More coffee..

Alex (the eternally harassed) appeared from somewhere.. yet more
coffee.

And finally Alan (Conell, non-smoker [4], token Irishman, and essential
part of every dutch AFP meet so far) showed up, minus
sister... Yet more coffee, and still more rain.

Alex explained why he was in Amsterdam (company jolly) and reported
on the events of Saturday night.. Sounded like quite a party. Leo
suggested mooning AFP, using a camera connected to the internet he
and Rob had spotted in a shop window somewhere. (Good thing we
forgot about that, I think..)

The rain let up, and since it was a valid lunchtime, and we got
bored of waiting for Bjorn, we decided to get some lunch.
Navigating on automatic, we crossed the Leidseplein and moved
towards the Burger King. I suggested we go for traditional dutch
chinese indonesian food, so we turned left... Unfortunately, the
nearest chinese restaurant was closed. Leo suggested pancakes
instead. However, the recommended restaurant was quite a long way
away, and my shortcut didn't really work.

Dutch pancakes.. how can I describe them. Think wagon wheels, think
bacon, pinapple, banananana and, simply because I like them that
way, a fried egg on top. Sprinkle liberally with syrup (beet,
butterscotch and for some reason, 'rinse appelstroop[5]'. Coffee
and chocolate to follow.

And no, we did not forget to harras Alex... He never answered Leo's
question, that I can remember... And of course, it rained..

Time for a drink... definitely time for a drink... I vaguely
remembered a pub (de Oorlam, or is it 'de Doelen' ? Not even the
pub itself seems to know) where they serve a decent pint of
Guinness, so we set of across town. I did manage to find the pub on
the second try, which is something of ae record for me.

Photographs from DW con and earlier meets were produced.. For those
of you who don't remember Fonz, he's the fellow looking
benevolently on while Emmet goes to work on the afp blind date
contestants. We all examined the collection of Bjorn
photographs. Leo explained why he was sliding under the
table.. nice story, Leo, and everybody once again agreed that Joan
looked simply amazing..

The usual subjects (roundabouts, beer, books, portable phones, afp,
barometers, history (particularly that of Suriname) etc. ) were
broached, and somebody was proposed to (by proxy.. Have you told
your sister yet, Alan ?). No psions present... Perhaps the only
flaw in an otherwise perfect meet.

Apfcon 97 was discussed: it was decided that holding it in
Amsterdam [6] would be like herding cats, so we decided on
Lutjebroek [7] instead. We did consider holding the meet in
international waters [8], on a minicruise on one of the ferries.

And it rained... Good thing we were inside most of the time.

The meeting ended around half past seven[9], in the rain, eating
hotdogs outside the Central station.

All in all, a wonderful time was had by all, and we're looking
forward to the next meet (Who's coming over next, people ?)

It's a brand name. Syrup made by Rinse Appleboilersson and descendants.

Sometime, somewhere in alt.fan.pratchett,
ti...@iaehv.nl (Tim T.) penned the following :

Only because the rest of us said we weren't going to do it.

I got lost (as I always do trying to get to Leidesplein) and I
was quite wet and very hung-over. See comment on rain above.

> minus sister... Yet more coffee, and still more rain.

A little too much beer was consumed the night before. You
know the way you go out for one beer. That happened to us
the Saturday night. The 'one' beer was found at about number
7 or 8. I think I left the pub at 3.00 in the morning, and had
to catch a train at 9.15 to get to the meet.

> away, and my shortcut didn't really work.

No, but we saw a little bit more of Amsterdams canals. *And* we
passed by Anne Franks house.

I really didn't think that a tomato, onion, and mushroom pancake would
be nice with syrup. Believe or not, it improved it. Lovely!.

> question, that I can remember... And of course, it rained..

I was told it was a very nice day here all day.

Well, the black stuff wasn't too bad, but I had to change to a
local brew after the first.

I still think you were completly lost Tim, and you just found the
pub by accident.

> table.. nice story, Leo, and everybody once again agreed that Joan

And that the fact that the photo of Karen (aka The Vodka Vixen) is the
most downloaded picture from L-Space at the moment. A very nice
picture it is too.

I asked her yesterday for you. She, umm, didn't say no, only kind
of hummed and hawed because I showed her a picture of you being
supported by a rubber chicken at the Con.

Yeah. I only got wet once. And that was only because I got lost
trying to find Leidesplein because somebody suggested that we meet
there. I have a nasty feeling that that sombody might have been me.

> The meeting ended around half past seven[9], in the rain, eating

Got on my train to Brussels at 20.30, and had to sit opposite a
hyper-active child for over 2 hours, while his parents ignored him
kicking me while I was trying to sleep. Thank god they got out at
Roosendaal. I was getting just a little bit miffed with them.

No really!

Would that make it double dutch ?.

> there... about the only way we can be sure of getting a plaque.

I parsed this a getting a plague. Impressions of the Netherlands and
all that ?.

Definatly a good meet. I really must try and make it over to the
UK at some stage and go to one of those meets.

Not really: My ex-wife once brought a tin of Rinse Perenstroop [1]
home from limburg: different brand from the Appelstroop.. which by
the way traditionally has a nice picture of a boy opening a tin of
appelstroop which incidentally has a nice picture of a boy... you
get the idea... In holland, this is referred to as the Droste [2]
effect: I expect you have something similar in the UK ?

Murk, you're reading *way* too much into Tim's use of the word "decided".

It upsets me a bit to see that we are apparently now at the stage where
even innocent meet reports are interpreted as attempts to force minority
decisions upon the rest of afp.

> Amsterdam is great - what's in Lutjebroek?

Absolutely nothing. It's just a name of a small town that sounds funny,
even to the Dutch themselves. This should give you some idea about how
serious we were when we "decided" to hold megameet '97 there.

You'd have thought a big city such as Amsterdam would have its own

The last time I was in Amsterdam (staying at the American Hotel as it

Yep. Lindt Excellence, for example, is 70% cocoa solids; I always pick

Actually, the egg bit is a traditional family recipe.. (As a matter
of fact, so are the fruit pancakes...) been around for
generations..[1] And the pancakes were served with butter, for those
who couldn't do without.

Noted.. We never went to these pubs when I were a young lad about
town in the eighties. Too many tourists for one thing. (and being
asked questions about the computers at the local police station for
another...)

It does, as a matter of fact.. When I was a sysadmin for the local
police, it was somewhere near the Damrak, with nice chinese signs
telling you where to eat, gamble and buy heroin. (or so I was
told.. don't know any chinese).

Ah yesss.. the Eurovision songcontest.. I diplomatically left that
out ;-). And thank you..

Indeed. However, don't forget we were looking for *lunch*, not dinner. I
have a hearty appetite, but I'm not sure I could've handled a rijsttafel at
13:00 in the afternoon...

I have no idea what Alton Towers is, but I don't think there are that
many Eftelings around, so it'll probably be the same theme park, yes.

Yep, that's why we were discussing if it would make sense to hold afpmeet
'97 in the vicinity of the Efteling. Our conclusion was that most of a.f.p.
would probably enjoy that. :-)

Leo's right.. This was the stage where I was starting to feel a bit
silly...and spout ideas. Still feel silly as a matter of fact: I've
been averaging three hours of sleep over the past few days. Sorry
if my use of any language is sometimes a bit off: in this context,
decided was intended to mean something like: it seemed like a good
idea at the time (to me, anyway).

I'll state my position on AFP-meets clearly [0] here (and please
note: this is my personal opinion; you can agree or disagree as much
as you like: it is not important, it is not anybody's policy):

The original idea on that fateful saturday (or was it sunday) night
in Manchester was: it would be nice to meet everyone again, some
time soon, somewhere else. Holland was proposed as a general
location for this meet. Once again: it seemed like a good idea at
the time, nothing was decided, no signatures in blood (or custard)
or anything.

In no way will I be responsible for anything like an *OFFICIAL* afp
meet. I'm more than willing to set up a meet [1] (iff I can get some
help) for those people who want to come to Holland: there seems to
be enough interest for that to be a workable proposition[2].
However, this is NOT IN NO WAY an *official* meet: about as
official as any party of more than two people getting together in a
pub and discussing beer, roundabouts and barometers. (which seems a
sensible definition of an afp meet.)

Sorry if anybody got the wrong impression... I'll be coming off duty
in about five hour's time: get some sleep, and attempt to become
semi coherent again.

TimT.
[0] Clear, me ? never... slightly less vague than usual, on
rereading.

[1] As in: find a place where it can be held, arrange catering, make
sure everybody knows how to get there.

[2] In the sense of: it seems likely that enough people would turn up,
to justify renting a place, try to arrange something with the
local transportation people, arranging a truckload of belgian
beer..

You know, I've lived in this country for more years than I care to
remember: don't think I've ever been in Lutjebroek. Perhaps
that's what makes it unique. By the way.. just looked at a map:
it's somewhere north east of Amsterdam, between Hoorn and
Enkhuizen. There are similarly named towns like Lutjehuizen and
Lutjewad according to my atlas.

I have never before eaten ham, cheese and pinapple pancakes, and this

Yes, I think we mentioned the rain, after all we wouldn't want them to
think we were forced to remain in the pub for 4 hours in the middle of
the day because we wanted to drink and discuss irrelevancies would
we....

Hm. It tastes vaguely like chocolate covered rasins, to me. I like those

even more distracting there. (I have *no* idea why I'm tasting that, by

I think you are quite correct in that assessment. If I have the spare
moolah, then count me in to the Dutch-mega-meet-near-die-Efteling.[1]

I will probably be in Dutchland in June as a works outing - if it's
then, then doubly so.

Well.... Ok. We can combine the idea of AFP at Alton Tower, shifted to
die Efteling, and the megameet. And with any luck, I'll be in England on
business and can go. Gods I hope so.
