Hi,
Not much help I know, but I was just sitting here composing the same post
when yours arrived. I can say that all was well down to kernel 2.4.6 -
it definitely seems to be a 2.4.7 problem. Any ideas please folks ?
Regards,
Geoff
Following up my own post, I found a recent thread on the
vmware-for.linux.experimental group, which looks depressing :-(

Same here. The Google groups has a link to a patch which addresses this
issue. I've just installed it and whilst it gives compilation warnings, the
modules build and install OK.
I'm now happily running VMWare 2.0.4 under Linux 2.4.7. So, to make this
work first download the patch:
ftp://platan.vc.cvut.cz/pub/vmware/vmmon-for-2.4.7-only.tar.gz
Then copy it to the '/usr/local/lib/vmware/modules/source' directory. Next,
run:
cd /usr/local/lib/vmware/modules/source
gunzip vmmon-for-2.4.7-only.tar.gz
After that, make a backup of the existing 'vmmon.tar' file and copy the new
one into its place:
cp vmmon.tar vmmon.tar.backup
mv vmmon-for-2.4.7-only.tar vmmon.tar
Finally, run:
to set things up. That should give you a working VMWare installation again.
Regards,
Carl.

In my previous post, part of the fix consisted of:
> cp vmmon.tar vmmon.tar.backup
> mv vmmon-for-2.4.7-only.tar vmmon.tar
Which is incorrect. It _should_ read:
> mv vmmon.tar vmmon.tar.backup
> mv vmmon-for-2.4.7-only.tar vmmon.tar
Sorry for any confusion. In fact, I typoed an earlier correction to this
(ctrl-enter instead of enter) and sent an incomplete message to the list. I
cancelled it, but it still seems to be present so please ignore it.... I
must need more caffeine!

Yes, I have had it under test for a few hours now and it seems fine.
Geoff
I can't recall why I wanted to install 2.4.7, I think I needed to add
something to kernel and thought, "since I'm rebuilding, might as well
see if a new kernel has arrived yet."
I'm trying to get my Windows2000 box and my VMWare Windows98 to talk to
my Samba server. Not much luck, if anyone can lend some advice on this one?
Thanks to all,
Dave

I have a working Samba / Win98 / 2K / NT config at home and at work.
Perhaps I can help?
What problems are you having? (eg, specific error messages, performance
issues, etc)

Carl.

Thanks for figuring this out. I was just getting ready to upgrade to 2.4.7 to
get some of the IEEE1394 and USB fixes.
Peace,
Jim
Dave
I'm running VMware on redhat 7.1 kernel 2.4.6 and I can't get it to
run without core dumping without an error message. Any suggestions?

the location changed. Look for the right location of the new kernel and
tell Vmware at this point where it is!
