Cruising for a bruising

about the relationship between "cruising" and queer bashing. I live in a
town where all the most scary high school rednecks (and I'll admit that I'm
perpetuating a stereotype here) get together and drive around in a circle for
hours on Friday and Saturday nights, often flying full sized confederate
flags in the back of their pickup trucks.
These folks scare the heck out of me. My partner and I are moving
specifically to get away from the strip where folks cruise. I was just
wondering if there was any stats or other information to back up my feeling
that this sort of cruising is not a terribly queer-friendly behavior...
So far in two separate incidents, I've been called a groove licker and I had
a truck filled with young men follow me for four blocks, yelling to find out
if I was a boy or a girl. *sigh*

Linda, you are doing the right thing by getting out of there. You are
obviously a target of these bigots, and it is too late to hide your
partner preference. Moving away from the cruising strip is
important...however, please realize that remaining in the same town or
county, keeps you highly visible to your enemies.
I strongly recommend that you and your partner carry pepper spray...or
even consider bearing a licensed gun or other legal weapon. Don't let
these thugs get the upper hand. I also suggest you seek out some local
gay group for support and empowerment.
I am so sorry you have to live surrounded by such evil. If I were a
millionaire, I'd give you and your loved one a better home to stay,
for free.
