Three weeks ago I got my new Corvette (ordered in January). 6speed, z51,
active handling, torch red/black, sports seats, etc.

A great car to drive and I love every inch of it and every mile with it.

However, a few things puzzle me:

1) at low speed the gearbox makes a rattling noise

2) cruise control jumps occasionally by 2 mph, not 1mph when pressing
set/res button

3) 1 to 4 shift

The 1. point is really bothering me. Is this normal?

The 2. point is not really important. I couldn't care less if cruise control
jumps from 71mph to 73mph - I don't need to be at exactly 72mph. But: does
this indicate that something is wrong with the electronics?

The 3. point is a pain in the neck. How can I stop this?

cheers,
Werner

1. 6-speed noise is common from what I understand (mine is auto), I
suspect that Chevrolet has a "fix" by now. At any rate let them
know your concern.
2. Dealer may be able to solve the cruise control regulation.
3. Buy a 6-speed by-pass from Mid America. Works great, I had one on
my '94.

1. I had mine in to the dealer for a week and they gave up and said the
rattling noise between shifts is normal. I think its bull. If you do find
a fix let me know. It does it between all gears when its warmed up.

2. I never use the cruise control

3. Mid America 800-500-8388 #17694 97-98 CAGS bypass harness - about $19.95

Dying is a very dull, dreary affair. And my advice to you is
to have nothing whatever to do with it.

Your right, it's bull. C5's before a certain '98 VIN(101534), there is a
fix part number 1256-0342. After that number there is a part in the bell
housing that needs to be replaced. Mine was built sept. 23rd and is
beyond the VIN to get the first fix, for quick reference. I can post the
bulitin and new part number tonight. The dealer gave me a print-out of
all bulletins a couple weeks ago. But the rattle is BS and can be fixed.

Also have that cruise checked out, I just went and played with mine on my
lunch break and it doesn't do that.

First congrats on the new car, I know you will enjoy it - I have a red 98
6sp convertible built in Jan. Seq # 16466 , 8500 miles

1. My 6 speed rattles a bit in low gear when starting from a dead stop with
minimum throttle. I do not hear it any other time.
2. I do not think this indicates a problem with the electronics. I have
noticed that my cruise seems to jump 2 mph sometimes, but since it does not
do it all the time, I attributed it to the duration my finger is on the
button, or that the car was going 71.5 mph and the resolution of the speedo
is only 1 mph.
3. 1-4 shift get the plug kit from Mid America or Ecklers, it works.

Good Luck

The transmission rattle and the shifter rattle are 2 different problems.
The updated shifter assembly 1256-0342 won't fix the transmission
rattle. I repeat they are 2 different problems. The transmission rattle
is very common on the 6 speeds and is nothing to worry about. And the
updated shifter assembly 1256-0342 has nothing to do with the bell
housing. I see so much bad info in this news group it drives me crazy.
If you don't know what your talking about - shut up.

Drives me carzy sometimes too. Your right on about the transmission
rattle. The T56 rattles in just about all it's applications. I've
heard a bunch of F-body owners make comments about the 1st gear
rattle.

Ok yea I made a mistake. I tried to be as informative as I could without
all the info infront to me. I never said they were the same problem. All
I said is that after a certain VIN number the shifter rattle doesn't
exist. But the tranny rattle does. I was wrong saying it was in the bell
housing, I was mistaken. The problem is in the tranny. The bulletin says
the noise can be heard anywhere from behind the seats up to the front of
the floor boards(kinda vague).

I just called my dealer and spoke to the guy that is putting the part on
my car as I type this. The part number is 22178940. He calls it a mount,
but he doesn't think that is the actual term for what it is. However it
has exactly the same casting number on it as the original, and is visually
identical to the original. He called GM and the diffrence is that there
is 2 valves inside it that have been revamped. I don't have the bulletin
number however this is the fix.

I apologize if I caused any confusion, I am having a whole ton of stuff
done to my car all at once(gotta be ready for bloomington, hope to see
anyone going) and got confused.

Also I am having a problem with my stearing wheel cover. The dealer is
replacing it but.......

The rubber center cover is doing something strange, on either side of the
corvette emblem it is getting dull. The rest of the rubber cover is nice
and shiny but there is 2 spots that are getting dull and the spots are
growing. And no, it isn't from wear I don't touch it there except to
armor all it. What is really funny is that when I armor all it those
spots stay shiny for only a day or so, when the rest of the wheel will
stay shiny for almost a week. And the wheel itself seems to have a
problem with the leather "breaking down" for lack of a better term. It
seems to be falling apart. I appears(in my far from professional opinion)
that the leather was wrapped too tight and it is now giving in to the
stress. Getting little lines of stress cracks in odd directions. I don't
wear a watch or rings so it isn't anything like that. The dealer is
replacing it, but I found it curious and any opinions would be
appreciated.

I also have a problem with the windows. They seem to have shifted and now
the tracks are scratching the glass. The dealer is fixing it, but I guess
everyone should watch out for it. I am also getting the fuel pump whine
fixed.

Someone asked me earlier, I do have a printout I got from the dealer with
a complete list of all bulletins from GM as of the 3rd week of may.
However the car is at the dealers having all that work done and it is in
the trunk. As soon as I get it I will scan the pages and make them
avaliable on my website. If they will scan, recycled paper and the
printer needed a ribbon. I may have to retype them into the computer, if
so bare with me it may take a few days. h I don't expect to get the car
back until Mon or Tues.

Again I apologize if I caused any confusion. But there is 2 seperate
fixes for 2 seperate rattles(I never intended to make them sound like the
same one), and the number above is the fix for the second one. The first
one is for a piece of linkage, I believe and the fix is detailed on
c5registry.com.
