Sunday, June 22nd, an unlikely group of heroes descended on the dungeons of
Delft to throw fear and horror into the hearts of the monsters there. Fully
equipped with adventuring gear (1) and weapons (2), they gathered en masse
in the "Grand Café Verderop" from there to bring chaos into the sleepy
village.
Members of the party were:

Jos Dingjan
Leo Breebart
Alan Connell
TimT
Robert Collier
Mike Knell
CyberCat
Jeroen Metselaar
Jeroen Burger
Jeremy Stark
Eelko

Special guests were:

Jennifer Barber
Faith(3)
Gina(3)

Also attending was the official Dutch AFPMeet reporter, yours truly. (5)

The meet started at 5 p.m., when after 1.5 hours it was decided that
everyone had arrived and the weather improved a bit (it had been quite a
downpour in the meantime), some exotic food was consumed. Some people
almost earned the wrath of the innkeeper calling his Gyros Döner Kebap, but
this faux-pas in the Greek-Turkish-relations could be prevented.
After the food was consumed, the meeting moved to the Ben&Jerry's by way of
the open market place, where the long-awaited duel over Jennifer Barber was
held to the amusement of the spectators (4). However, it ended in a Draw
when both combattants almost simultaneously ran out of ammunition.
Thereafter, Ben & Jerry's once more proved that they _do_ produce
comestible ice cream; then the party decided to end the evening at the
"Locus Publicus", where the final beta had been booted.
Due to the size of the group, discussions tended to split up and move
completely different ways, so here are a few of the topics mentioned:

- AFP
- someone is cancelling all EARTHLINK.COM posts, which included Rocky
- Beer (is it vegan? probably not)
- mashed potatoes and sex (don't ask!)
- follow-spots in the theatre
- aliens
- recruiting videos in Japanese
- phone systems
- T-Shirts were translated
- drink sizes
- table arrangements
- Dutch Singers
- absent afpersons
- Clarecraft arrangements
- Greek Food
- plane flights
- ISPs
- coasters were ripped to shreds
- How to pronounce "scone"
- The movie "When Harry Met Sally"

and lots of others

As the following day was a working day for some afparticipants, the first
people leaft early. However, a date for NL 5.0 was already picked: Saturday
September 6th.

Due to the size of the group, there probably were many noteworthy quotes
that bypassed me (6). Anyone to add to this is welcome...

Memorable Quotes and Events

Five minutes into the meet, the first PSION at a Dutch afpMeet was spotted

When TimT showed his rubber chicken, the possibility of Mr. Fox showing up
was mentioned, but then the meet probably moved before he found the café.
The chicken, however, was scared the whole evening and hid.

On SuperSoakers: "This is a mysterious European custom that I don't quite
understand" (Mike Knell)

About the Heineken Brewery in Toulouse, France: "That's not a brewery,
that's a missionary outpost" (TimT)

About the Verderop: "This ois a pub, Mike, but not as we know it." (TimT)

Gina compared Leo's looks to those of Adam Sandler

After the duel, TimT (who had noticed Jennifer's lack of enthusiasm) went
near her with his super soaker. "Jennifer! ... Were you paying attention?"
Jennifer looked uncertainly at the gun. "No, Jennifer, you were _not_
paying attention!" Jennifer flinched slightly when TimT pointed his gun at
her. "Because if you had been, you'd know..." TimT pulled the trigger,
Jennifer ducked "... that the gun is empty".

"I'm stirring this because it's hot, But then, it's suposed to be hot
chocolate" (Gina)

"The Danish are hard of Herring" (Jeremy)

Mike: "If you mention computers one more time..." - Jos: "...I'll reset
you."

Jeremy: "Is this jet lag or boredom?" - Gina: "Train lag"

"Nightmare on Delft Street" (Jeremy)

We tried calling Michelena, but her phone was constantly busy (over 1
hour). After the first attempt, TimT remarked, "She is bloody well
engaged!" - Jeroen (I think): "With whom?"
After the umptieth attempt, when TimT was leaving, he finished with the
words, "Michelena is now officially engaged."

(1) e.g., umbrellas and raincoats
(2) Super Soakers of all sizes, from the Assault gun all the way down to
the derringer hold-out gun size
(3) faith and Gina are not afpeople ATM, though they show promise
(4) although Jennifer was singularly unimpressed by the proceedings and
hardly even looked.
(5) It was duly noted that - like in the first two Dutch afpMeets, the
foreign contingent outnumbered the Dutch...
(6) any anytime I made any note for this report - like names of attendees
or topics - people would look uneasily

At the end of the evening, our bar bill at Locus showed we had consumed a
total of 24 pints of Guiness. Considering the fact that several people left
early, that the ladies present didn't drink anything except for hot
chocolate, and that Rob, Roach, and me didn't drink any beer either, I'd
say that that is quite a staggering amount of booze....

Lots of movies, actually. As usual, everybody turned out to pretty much
like the same list of "usual suspects": Princess Bride, Strictly Ballroom,
Young Einstein, Muriel's Wedding, yadda yadda yadda. We're all sheep.

At one point I think I was discussing Abba with five people, neither of
whom was actually born at the time Waterloo won the Eurovision song
contest. Argh.

News to me!

I tried to ascertain if this was, in fact, a compliment or not (not having
the faintest idea who Adam Sandler was), but the conversation went downhill
rapidly from there. I have mercifully forgotten all exact details.

I'm willing to set up a mail to news gateway on dibbler, if that's
what it takes. However, I think a friendly note from our afpa
moderator would work nicely, in this case. I've forwarded the
relevant information.

Well.. The evidence:
Several cancel messages for earthlink postings in afp, all made by
the same person, all on the same day.

I only get the cancelmessages for a very small newsfeed though;
based on the available evidence it might be somebody with a grudge
against either afp or Rocky, though that seems very, very unlikely.

On the other hand, I do get asr, and Joe Zeff's posts haven't been
cancelled.

Let's not jump to any conclusions, and wait to see if a polite note
will work, before anybody does anything hasty, OK ?

I'm sure the spectators included some japanese tourists.. I think
I hit one..

Yeah.. On the other hand, the man seems to know what he's doing
otherwise. I'll forward a copy of the relevant cancelposts
somewhere, and we'll see what can be done about that.

Aaarrggghhh..
It was a special promotion video for the Japanese market. ASML are
looking for Japanese customers.

much, but I can pass on your C.V. to the right people.

It'll be an Eindhoven meet, people. I'll try and arrange a live
newsfeed from the pub.

Three hours later, Jeremy produced the first Newton at an afpmeet, I
think.

Not scared.. Just lurking, waiting for Mr. Fox to come in, so it
could jump out at him..

It's back to its usual role as a project manager at ASML.

Not really. TimT may have had the biggest gun, but mine was more
efficient by far. By the time Tim's gun was empty, I still had enough
water left to defend myself against the sneaky little gun Jos brought
along.

The problem is, it's not the one that has the most ammo left at the
end that wins, but the one that hits first. As we both hit each other
almost simultaniously it's impossible to say who won.

It was fun though. We started out the usual way, back to back moving
apart ten paces each, but when we turned and fired it turned out
neither of our SuperSoakers had a 20 pace range. At that point we just
charged each other while firing, which I don't think is usual duelling
procedure...

>(4) although Jennifer was singularly unimpressed by the proceedings and
>hardly even looked.

At which point Tim said "That does it. We should both propose to
Michelena instead."

Roach forgot to mention the ideas for AFP - The Computer Game. I don't
remember the exact details, but it did include dodging spam and
spam-traps while trying to post to AFP.

And then there was The Question. Are there any monkeys on the
Discworld? We know the Librarian isn't one[1] but do they exist?

Getting back home on Monday turned out to be more difficult than
expected. Due to a massive electrical failure in the centre part of
the country no trains were running on the normal route. I had to take
an alternative route that was about 50% longer. Still, it was worth
it.

Well, it was not really mentioned but more something happening. The
shaping of a delicate piece of art at the greek restaurant. We'll
have to wait for the pictures to fully apreciate it, so I'll just
shut up now.

According to Earthlink, they *are* doing something about this.
They've stopped *all* SMTP routing through their site, and have put
delays on NNTP, apparently. Read all about it in news.groups
(forgotten the subject, sorry).

I do think that unfortunately they do still appear to have a hole, but
no site should have to do this. They are investigating things and
have (IIRC) started informing complainants about the results of their
investigations.

In the nature of things, at least *some* posts are being put through
Earthlink, and we don't want to kill those, either. It's an extremely
bad precedent for Usenet and the Internet Mail system as a whole,
because the system relies on sites routing mail and news to other
sites.

>I doubt that *all* EL posts are actually being cancelled, BTW - I've

I haven't heard about it happening, but haven't seen any posts from
Earthlink for a while.

I wouldn't want them to have to shut down over this. In my dealings
with them, they have seemed to be among the best at dealing with junk
email and spam. Them, UUNet, Pipex and Demon actually seem to do
something about it.
