MEANWHILE, A RARE MILITARY VICTORY
OPENLY GAY MARINE MAKES THE FINAL GRADE.

On Feb. 20, Sgt. Justing Elzie, the 14-year veteran who was
honored as Marine of the Year in 1989 and who became the first openly
gay Marine when he announced on Jan. 19, 1993 that he is gay, was
finally granted his retirement from the United States Marine Corps
after serving openly for more than four years.
Sgt. Elzie had been accepted into an early retirement program
in January 1993 when he first publicly stated that he was gay, and the
Marine Corps removed him from that program in in order to bring
discharge proceedings. Sgt. Elzie then filed suit in the United
States District Court for the District of Columbia, seeking to declare
his discharge unconstitutional and to order the military to restore
his retirement to him. The court granted Sgt. Elzie a preliminary
injunction requiring the military to retain him on active duty while
the case was litigated. As a consequence, Elzie has served on active
duty for more than four years as an openly gay Marine.
Like his prior 10 years of service, Sgt. Elzie's four years of
service as an openly gay Marine has been exemplary. During this time,
he was awarded an official Commendation for Service "in keeping with
the highest traditions of the Marine Corps." He was three times
recommended for promotion, and his commanding officers have praised
him not only for his individual efforts, but also for his leadership
and his ability to win the respect and obedience of the other Marines
in his unit. As his final fitness report states, Sgt. Elzie has "the
leadership abilities that are needed to lead the Marine Corps into the
21st Century."

We didn't ask. He told. He KNEW he would get busted.

He lied to serve... and that is NOT in the highest tradition
of any military service.

I guess it's clear that, except to see your name on the net, you didn't
have one.

He served "openly" for four years as a result of a court order. That is
a meaningless gesture, particularly since he was forced into early
retirement in the first place, and couldn't stick it out for the whole
term. I wonder how many times he was passed over for promotion?

I repeat: Lying is NEVER in the highest traditions of ANY military
service... this is obviously a concept way over YOUR head.

Being deemed "Marine Of The Year" does not speak of a poor soldier at
all. You gotta be pretty damn good for that.

Gee. I guess in your world of situational ethics, the fact that he
lied is meaningless.

The argument? Well, if he told them he was gay during the enlistment
period, they would have disqualified him. If he mentioned it before
he became "Marine of the Year," then he wouldn't have got that either,
assuming he did.

That is just SOOOO unfair, right?

Look. The rules are the rules. If you do not LIKE the rules, then
get them changed. Have Congress change them. Get that gutless son
of a bitch that runs the place TO KEEP HIS WORD (gee, why do I think
that most gays voted for Clinton even though he lied to them about
the gay in the military thing?) and CHANGE the policy. Get the Supreme
Court to rule that it's discriminatory, and have THEM force the military
to change.

Since NONE of that is likely during my lifetime, quityerbitchin and
get over it. Gays have no legal right to serve.

Right, wrong or indifferent, thats the way it is.
