Don't you have like ANY respect for your health and bodies?

Hi, Lomaxx: To answer you swift, short question: I do!

I don't like all this seamy trash using gay forums as garbage
dumps...not just by gays, but by hetero opportunists and bashers.
("Opportunist," as in that quack who keeps advertising sexual prowess
for just $20, w/o any proof of his treatment.) I am new to the net,
and am all too glad to instill these forums with my perspective.
Hopefully, this will stimulate others discouraged by the seaminess, to
contribute their ideas about being homosexual, in ways political,
social, intelligent, and involved...without this ridiculous,
animal-like sexual objectification.

Society still expects gays to be filthy-minded...as just the idea of
being "homosexual" is equated with pornography (in many peoples'
minds, so-called "liberals" as well as "fundamentalists"). Look at
all those programs created to shield children from pornography on the
Internet: they all include word searches for "homosexual", "gay", and
"lesbian". This societal pressure filters into the gay community, so
that part of being accepted by your own kind, also includes
expectations to act sissy, slutty, and (in less kind words), faggoty.
And usenet is merely an extension of this subculture's inherent
shortcomings as well as assets.

As a gay person myself, it is extremely discouraging to still run into
so many gay men who think, or act, like being "gay" is also being
"cheap" and "unwholesome". They think that, to be gay-identified,
there must be a lot of defacing sexual humor and behavior. Otherwise,
you wouldn't see so many gay shops displaying erotically posed, nude
men in their storefronts...even when their business has nothing to do
with sex per se!

The gay community, as I have known it in S.F., thinks I'm "weird"
because I don't bother going to bath houses, sex clubs, or bars. I am
an eclectic mixture of conservative, liberal, and moderate ideas. On
the conservative side, I believe in monogamy (or at least devotion to
one's partner), responsible sex, and mutual respect in all social
relations.

I believe there are many other gay men and lesbians who are as I
am...but they still are in social circles relatively closeted.
Therefore, they are less likely to get too active in Internet
newsgroups...at least, the ones that are explicitly homosexual in
theme. So until that changes--and I intend, in my own small way, to
contribute to this change--I don't think we'll get much other than
trashy types, and heterosexuals who love to bash their way around.
And this is definitely *not* the intent of most of these lesbian/gay
newsgroups.
