My hubby is graduating trucking school onJuly 16. He was pre-hired by
Werner. The recruiter made it sound like heaven on earth. Can I get any
non-recruiter realistic info about this company from you all. I want to
be prepared for whatever we get into. Thanks

All I am going to post on this is: Trucking is not going to be Heaven when
starting out new.

My brother in law worked for them for 5 years right out of school also.
He said they werent too bad to work for...BUT home time stinks..he was
out for weeks at at a time and dispatcher "forgot" to get him home for
time he scheduled off. He finally quit when he got married...my sister
in law was not a HAPPY truckers wife...lol. Best of luck to u and hubby.

Take it from someone who knows the transportation industry fairly well from

both the railroading and trucking viewpoints, Werner is very much like many of
the larger firms, and whether the posters here agree or not, their employment

package is very competitive, among their peers.

When starting out new, he needs to remember NOT to be influenced by other
drivers, who will ALWAYS offer an opinion on how he should handle everything
from his dispatcher, to an A$$hole receiving manager, to his every encounter
with all forms of law enforcement, (fewer with a company truck). He needs to
remember that those offering advice have absolutely NO JEOPARDY in anything
they offer. If he is willing to do everything he can do to run legally, and
make his employer look good to the customer, he can still make a decent living,
and even though it's anything BUT easy, his efforts to do a decent job will not
go unnoticed. Clarence Werner and his boys definately know the trucking
industry and try to treat their employees with respect and a decent wage and
benefit package. He has chosen one of the best companies to start his driving
career with, if he'll just stick with it, the rewards will come with time. I
know one driver who has been with them since the beginning, and they take very
good care of him, but he doesn't get any special treatment as far as loads or
destinations, or anything else.

Good Luck and God Bless,

This is the key to success in any job.

Just don`t fall for their "Lease-Purchase" scam...

OOIDA has a class action suit against them now as a result of unfair leasing
practices...

I just finished my 8 weeks training with werner and it was anything but
easy.I know I still have a long way to go but i will learn as time
permits. But I can say this its hard running with a trainer that wont
stop running what i mean is they will run you into the dirt time and
time again. But just remember its only for 8 weeks and learn as much as
posible sooon you will have your own truck and you might missthat
trainers guidance becouse there wont be anyone there to ask its only
you.Dont expect any sleep on a trainers truck

That sucks--I used to manage a Dollar General and the freight is not
palletized either--unloaded one box at a time......

She'd make more money being a lumper or collecting cans from the side of
the road. Those sorry Dollar General loads were the prime reason I avoided
Werner. I wanted to drive their trucks not unload their trailers. No
warehouse worker is going to drive you and your truck to your backhaul or
send you their paycheck when you wreck your back doing their job and need a
few weeks to heal. Why would any driver tolerate unloading trailers
regularly? As a driver you are likely to have a head start on back
problems, get little regular exercise, and run a serious risk of injury
several states away from home when you start unloading trailers. No
thanks, if I wanted to work for a living I wouldn't have gotten my CDL. :-)

Had to make a delivery, pulled around to the back to the docks and
what was in my way... a Werner truck unloading at a Dollar General
store. Talked to the driver and he agreed to unhook from his trailer
so I could back in. Took a look up inside his trailer, which was
backed up to a door. There were rollers setup leading from the trailer
to inside the store. From the floor of the trailer to the roof, loaded
on the floor, was over 2000 boxes. The driver was picking up each box
and placing them on the rollers. Now this was down here in Louisiana,
hot and humid has all get out, in a dry van.

I cannot for the life of me understand why anybody would take a job
like this man had.

Oh, I forgot this important piece of information, I asked him how much
were they paying him to unload. He told me $50.00. He told me that it
would take approximatly 4 hours to unload his trailer.

$12.50 an hour? probably more than he makes sitting in traffic

Obviously some of you have never had to do local delivery where you unload it
all. I watched a Schneider driver unload, by hand a 53' pumpkin by himself,
hand stacked front to back top to bottom, with only the last two feet of
trailer bare, and a Nothing over Dollar store here in Denver. The company paid
him $75.00 to unload and the customer paid him another $75.00 with asking, did
it every week for last 4 months. Go to Target or ACE hardware wharehouses,
most are driver unload entirely.

That post was from 1999, that's 16 years ago.
The guy probably has probably retired by now.
