Christian musician guilty in sex case
By BILL BRAUN World Staff Writer
11/2/01

An award-winning Christian music performer pleaded guilty
Thursday to sex offenses involving a girl who was a back-up
dancer for his Tulsa-based group.

Sentencing for Ja'Marc Antoine Davis, 26, is set for Dec. 13.

Davis, who has performed with the Christian dance pop group Raze,
pleaded guilty to three felonies -- rape by instrumentation, lewd
molestation and sodomy.

Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris recommended a 10-year
sentence as part of a plea negotiation in which seven related counts
were dismissed.

District Judge Jefferson Sellers ordered that a background report be
prepared to evaluate the defendant's merits as a probation candidate.
Davis remains free on bail.

Sellers told Davis that there is no "guarantee of probation."

Davis was arrested March 1 in Tulsa after Raze's first concert in a
planned 30-city tour, which was later canceled.

Defense attorney Rob Nigh said Thursday that Davis' musical career is
"on hold" and that he has not been performing with Raze while awaiting
a resolution of his case.

Nigh described Davis as an "extraordinary young man who accepted
responsibility for this offense from the very beginning" and made "a
complete statement to police."

Prosecutors contend that Davis had a sexual relationship from mid-1998
until mid-1999 with a teenager who under the law was too young to
agree to such conduct.

An affidavit by Detective Chris Witt said the girl -- who is now 17 --
told police that she had consensual sexual contact with Davis about 15
to 20 times, usually when they were in the defendant's car.

Davis admitted having an "intimate" relationship and being "physically
involved" with the girl, who he said was 14 "when they first began
seeing each other," Witt's affidavit said.

In the plea agreement, Harris agreed to dismiss four counts of lewd
molestation, two counts of sodomy and one count of rape by
instrumentation.

Another count of rape by instrumentation was dismissed in June when
Davis waived his right to a preliminary hearing on all the other
charges.

Nigh said the girl has never had to testify in court, "and that was a
very important consideration" for Davis.

Raze's brand of Christian music and its 1999 CD "Power" earned the
group a Dove Award in the category of Dance/Rap/Hip-Hop.

The group won a Spot Music Award last year in the category of best
gospel act. The group was nominated again for a Spot award in the same
category this year but did not win.

Sellers told Davis on Thursday that whatever sentence is imposed, "you
will get three felony convictions."

After two weeks in jail, Davis was released March 16 upon posting
bonds totaling $110,000.

Well, on the positive side, the group Raze only needs to
change one letter in its promotional material, and they
can keep raping, er.., rapping for Christ.

Good point.

I don't know what it is about the "religious business", but it seems
an inordinate number of its practitioners have problems waiting until
vaginas ripen to the legal age of harvesting...

It must be something to do with all that "Laying On Of Hands"(tm)
stuff...

My bet would be on the "Rose".
Kids are attracted to bright and colorful things...

I wonder if Mr. Davis prefers his "ladies" dress in Luv's or Pampers?

I think he deserves some leniency because he obvioulsy had very
cruel parents to be named Ja'Marc Antoine...

Yeah, they attract some real sicko's for some reason.

I think it's just that con-artists of all types are drawn
to the most "respectable" cover they can find, and,
in our society that usually means religion.

We had a "youth counselor" fellow who tried to put
the moves on my younger sister when she was in her
mid-teens.

I met the guy once and thought he was a creep (even
before his motives were clear) and told my parents so.

Still, that Christian "aura" was hard for them to see
through. I don't know all the details since I was living
out of town, but I recall that he actually proposed
marriage when she was about 15.

My sister was a real horse lover, and that was an
activity they shared in common. In an ironic twist
of fate, the bastard was thrown from a horse and
broke his back, putting a real cramp in his "counseling".

And my sister moved on to another guy.

No better witness to this fact than the likes of Jim Bakker, Jimmy
Swaggart, Oral Roberts and such...

Only one of those three actually "got caught" and served time in
prison but the other two are in my opinion just as crooked... Just
smarter I guess. Well, that and Swaggart is really, really good at
crying...

I've heard of similar scenarios, more often than one would expect.

When you aren't gullible it's pretty easy to see through those guys.

He probably wanted to make the "laying on of hands"(tm) legal.

It was likely very fortunate for her than she moved on.
Otherwise she might have become just another "obedient southern
baptist wife"(tm) and that's not the fate one would wish upon a
sister...

No amount of abuse suffered as a child justifies abusing another child
later in life.

Sure his parents probably wanted to "get even" for his being born but
I've head/read of "worse" names for kids...

Oh well, he didn't get off too bad in efforts to "Let's Make A
Deal"(tm) with Tulsa County DA Tim Harris, a DA that in my opinion has
a fondness for making deal with supposed "christians" that molest
kids...

Tulsa County DA Tim Harris charged two $6/hr clerks for selling
Penthouse. He refuses to charge officials at ORU with failing to
report on-going child molestation which the university knew of for
MONTHS. Why is this? Please call 918-596-4805 and ask him.
