Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 crashes while loading -- I cannot view pdf
documents on my Win2k machine anymore! The previous version of Acrobat
Reader, 4.05, worked without any problems.

The error that I get is the following:

Font Capture: AcroRd32.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read".

The crash occurs at the point in the loading of the program when
"Initialzing DocBox.api" appears.

Any ideas? I am running Win2k SP1 with IE5.5 SP1 on a Latitude CPxJ
notebook with 512 MB RAM. NOTE: AAR 5 is working just fine on my
desktop, which has a very similar cofiguration!

TIA for your help.

I had this exact problem after installing Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (not the reader)
on W2K. Adobe tech support had me delete the docbox.api file (it doesn't
affect your ability to read acrobat files at all). To try it do the
following (you must *delete* the file - renaming it won't help - if you
insist on keeping a copy of the file, be sure to move it *out* of the folder
instead of just renaming it):

Delete the following file:

Program Files\Acrobat 5.0\Acrobat\Plug_ins\Intertrust\DocBox.api

NOTE: Acrobat reader uses slightly different folder names, but you're
looking for the file "DocBox.api" somewhere in the folders nested under
whereever you installed Acrobat Reader 5.0.

Deleting the file fixed my problem on two different W2K machines, one
running Acrobat 5.0 and one running Acrobat Reader 5.0.

BTW, on another W2K machine that had this problem, we tried again with a
freshly installed copy of W2K + Sp1 + all available Microsoft updates. On
that machine, Acrobat 5.0 installed and runs like a dream, even with the
Docbox.api file intact (but who wants to reinstall W2K just to get Acrobat
to work, when the work-around is so simple?).

Ohhh, you bet -- it is slightly easier to delete the DocBox.api file than
to reinstall W2k + SP1 alright... ;)

Again, many thanks for your help!

I've had no problems with W2K (SP1) and AR5. Works fine.

Did you guys un-install Acrobat 4.0 and your version of the Acrobat

Yes, I did. I also tried to uninstall AR5 and reinstall it, to no avail.

After reading this thread, I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.05c, and
then downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.1. I then rebooted my computer (my
preference after installing a new program). Each time I tried to open Adobe
Acrobat Reader 5.0.1, the program failed to load, and there would be a brief
error reference to AcroRd32.exe on my monitor.

I followed PLM's post in this tread, and deleted DocBox.api from C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\plug_ins\InterTrust. Adobe Acrobat Reader
5.0.1 now opens, and works as advertised.

We have had mixed results with Acrobat Reader 5.0 on Win2K SP1. Both the
machines with Acrobat Writer 5.0 had this problem but other machines didn't.
The readme says to delete the Intertrust directory under plugins (resulting
in Reader running in debug mode?). No problems at all on non Win2K machines.

I installed Acrobat 5 (ful version) on my W2k system (with SP1). I rebooted
and got an "invalid system disk" message. I tried used the W2k repair
facilty and it told me that the system was corrupted and irrepairable. It
also messed up my D drive which had Win98 installed.

I am now reinstalling everything (except Acrobat 5).
Previously I had Acrobat 4 reader installed but that was all. I uninstalled
it before installing Acrobat 5.

Aargh!
