CDRW in WinXP

I have a Mitsumi CR-48X8TE CD-RW (16x8x40x) and the cd recording feature
that comes with Windows XP does not recognize my CDRW as a recordable drive.
It sees it as a "DVD/CD-ROM drives - (Standard CD-ROM drives)" - from the
cdrw's properties and as a "CD-RW Drive" in My Computer.

I have seen a KB article over this at Q260992 only that is for Windows 2000.

Also, in the ISO Burning powertoy, I cannot choose a recorder and thus that
powertoy (a must for me) is completely useless. For now I use Nero - Burning
Rom and that gets the job done.

PS: I have the IMAPI service already set to automatic but still no avail.

Any help would be greatly welcomed.

I had the same problem. Here's the solution:

Go to Start>Run> type "Regedit" and click "OK".

Now click on the + signs for each of the paths as listed below and then
follow the branch to the next one.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD
Burning\Drives

Then click on the yellow folder icon for
"Volume{0c092dc0-c259-11d5-bfe4-806d6172696f}".

In the right hand window will be an item called "Drive Type"

Right click this and change the Dword value to 2

Click "OK" and exit registry editor.

Restart and that should give you the options for burning. At this point
my
CD-R and CD-RW discs were still not being recognised, but uninstalling
the
CD burning update (Q309691) solved this. If you have the CD burning
update
(from Windows Update), go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove
Programs,
and find it near the bottom of the list. It's called "Windows XP Hotfix
(SP1) [See Q309691 for more information]". Remove it, restarting if
necessary. If you don't have the fix, try downloading it from Windows
Update.

My PC does the same thing. It's a new emachine 1.5Ghz
with native xp. The IMAPI CD-Burning Service keeps
stopplng even though I've set it to auto. Pretty
frustrating for a new system. I've mailed emachine tech
support and I'll let you know what I find.

There appears to be several CDRW drives that are experiencing this problem.

Removing the CD Burner update downloaded from the Windows Update website has been shown to fix this problem, in some cases. This is a non-invasive procedure and can be reversed if it does not work.

Go to Control Panel/Add-remove Programs. Scroll down to the entry "Windows XP Hotfix (SP1) [See Q309691 for more information]" select it and click the Add/Remove button. This will uninstall that update. Reboot and check to see if the Record tab is back.

If you do happen to experience any negative effects, you can simply go back to Windows Update and reinstall the burner update.

Well, i uninstalled the hotfix, with no avail...
I did the regedit edit and now i have the tab.. but when i try to burn the
files in the temp to the cd, it says there is no cd in the drive... also i
only get 1x speed from the recording tab options....

One question ....... when I attempted to remove the
update I got a message saying several programs installed
since the time of the update "MAY" not function... this
bothers me as the update was doen early on and I've added
close to 30 gigs of programs to my system since that
time... Will I have to reinstall all progeams it
lists ???????

Have you checked the drive manufacturer? I've heard that some Memorex drives
do not and will not support XP. I realize your drive is not a Memorex but it
may also be true for Mitsumi. It's worth a look into rather than drive
yourself crazy trying to get something to work that might not work. Or maybe
they have a firmware update for the burner.
