The Associated Press
GREENVILLE ó The president of Bob Jones University says he wants to shed
the fundamentalist label because the term has been redefined as
ëëterrorismíí in the minds of many people since Sept. 11.

Bob Jones III now wants to be called a preservationist to describe
Christians with a fierce belief in the Bibleís literal, inerrant truth.

ëëInstead of ëfundamentalismí defining us as steadfast Bible believers, the
term now carries overtones of radicalism and terrorism,íí writes Jones in
his ëëPresidentís Corneríí on the university Web site.íí ëFundamentalistí
evokes fear, suspicion and other repulsive connotations in its current
usage.íí

University spokesman Jonathan Pait said the conflict was brought home to
him recently as he corresponded with a student at a New York university who
is studying fundamentalism.

ëëWhen he thinks fundamentalist,íí Pait said, ëëitís the idea of these
militant people going around blowing up buildings.íí

Jones writes that the university remains ëëunashamedly fundamentalist,íí
but accuses the media of lumping Christian fundamentalists with Islamic
fundamentalists. It is time, he contends, for a new label.

Pait acknowledged that changing the publicís use of the word will be hard
because fundamentalists are such a loose-knit group. ëëSo there couldnít be
someone to just stand up and say, ëHey, weíre going to change from
fundamentalist to whatever,í î he said.

The university is known internationally for its unwaveringly literal
interpretation of Scripture.

ëëWe believe the Bible was verbally inspired and inerrant in the originals
and preserved in all languages where it has been carefully and literally
translated from the Hebrew and Greek,íí Jones wrote.

My attorney will be filing a lawsuit against you on Monday for your
willful (possibly criminal) negligence in not providing an
Irony-O-Meter warning.

The severity of the implosion has not yet been quantified in
monetary terms but we're looking at six figures. Due to the uniqueness
of the event, the instantaneous explosion of twenty five discarded
Meters occupying a closet and presumed to be burned out from past
religious encounters, we feel it necessary to begin litigation at this
time.

"Preservationist"? That's an insult to anyone who's ever cleaned a painting,

Come to think of it..it's an insult to *anyone* who can read, write & think in

I think the only reason they don't think on such small scale terms is
they expect to have control of the US military if they can keep Shrub in

Oh, I'm sure there are some nutballs out there in Fundyland - abortion

Feh. I never get the breifing packets on time. Heck, my EAC decoder

You are of course correct. They want to keep his handlers in office.
Dear gods unmighty how I fucking hate republicans, and their bleating god
soaked idea of how to treat this country. How the HELL do they manage to
have a reputation for being spendthrifts with all this give money to
churches and throw money instead of brains at the pentagon crap?
Considering all the outright theft and such I don't think we're
getting 10% of our money's worth out of the republicans.
Sure they'll cut funding to anything that directly helps people. If
it's a social program it's out on it's ass. But then they turn around and
spend so much on the already rich that they actually manage to raise the
deficit higher than any democrat can ever handle.
Clinton brings the deficit down to a managable level from Regan and
Bush senior's excesses and the fucking DEMOCRATS are painted as the
excessive spenders? WHAT THE FUCK?
I hate how fucking stupid people are.

Ugh. Sorry to vent that rant on you. I made the terrible mistake of
flipping into a news report while watching TV for the few minutes it takes
to cook dinner. That always leaves me in a foul mood deprived of faith in
humanity. It'll pass.

Yep. My response to the article was that Bob jones, after gleefully
accepting the label "fundamentalist" for lo these many years, finally
learned what it means.
