Stayed at the club until 11:30, my latest yet. It really started to thin
out by then. I did a lot of dancing; I don't think I even counted how
many people I danced with. And I learned a LOT.

The thing I'm most glad I learned is a certain aspect of not being
self-centered in my dancing. Granted, as the guy I'm the lead,
so naturally I'm going to have a lot of control over how the dance
goes. So, my strategy has always been to think "OK, a move would be
good.... NOW!" and then I'd do a move and she'd spin around and I'd be
like "OK, I need a different move now. Oh no! I think I've done all
my moves!" Then, between dances tonight, I decided to watch some poeple
dancing and see what other people were doing differently from me, and I
noticed that a lot of guys just took a few measures holding one hand and
letting the follower do some styling. I ran into one of the teacher/DJs
there and asked him about it, and he said it was a good idea because it
makes a woman feel "listened to." I thought I'd give it a try.

The next woman I danced with, I did like one or two turns to just show
her I knew what I was doing, and then I opened up and let her style. Well,
it turns out that was a very good move, since it was one of her favorite
songs and she started singing along. I tried to keep up with her, and
as I got to know the song, it occurred to me that I could time my moves
around the vocals, and that would give me the pacing I need to give her
breathing space. And I did, for the most part, and found that I felt
less pressured to program the dance, now that I was letting the song do
it. It helped, though, that she had taken a college course in dancing,
and danced like a pro. In short, it felt more like a conversation than
a speech. It was wonderful to learn that I could do something so simple,
increase my partner's enjoyment of the dance, and at the same time take
some pressure off myself.

She seemed to enjoy herself, too. Though, immediately afterwards,
she ran off to talk to some friends almost immediately. I tracked down
another teacher and asked her if that was a bad sign, and she said that
it's just that the moment a dance ends, it's often pretty awkward, and
flight instinct kicks in. It was then that I remembered that I've done
the dance-and-ditch a few times myself. I'll have to learn how to deal
with the post-dance situation, but that will come soon enough.

This weekend, there's an event... I'll post about it later.

I don't find it natural at all. But then, I'm barely
competant to dance without crushing my partners feet[1]. It
is a good thing that I wear sneakers instead of steel-capped
boots.

At least you're smart enough to sort out how to GET TO THE
CLUB! I've finally summoned the courage[3] to ask one of the
gurls from my dance learning class to go to dancing club
with me, and I'm supposed to call her tonight and arrange it
all, but

A) I don't know WHERE the club is
B) I have NOTHING to wear[2]
C) I can't make out the 4th digit of
the phone number she wrote down. It's
either a 2 or a 6 or maybe an &
D) Shit.

There is so much Kotext-away bait in this post. Good thing I'm too shy to
apply it.

You've hit upon the thing I hate about dancing, which is being aware of
the other person's moves. I'd rather it happen as you describem which
"was letting the song do it", but that doesn't happen often to me.

In that case, proabably the only thing you can do is, sometime later, ask
her to dance again, which lets her know that you weren't insulted or
anything. I for one am GLAD when she runs off afterwards, because I don't
know what to do when she stays.

I find the music naturally moves me, but the whole "leading thing" is not
natural at all. If I am dancing with a girl, and I feel comfortable
enough about asking, I ask her to lead. I'm a submissive, what can I say?

> It is a good thing that I wear sneakers instead of steel-capped boots.

My shoes don't look anything like this:

but this shoe seems to have replaced the ones I bought at this very
establishment last year. The flames on mine are much cooler.

"THE CLUB", as in, the one club in town? Or any club? Either way, GET A
MA-er, GET THE PHONEBOOK. Look up dance clubs. Get on the Webernet and
check out local listings.

> B) I have NOTHING to wear[2]

Uhm, I'm guessing their's enough time to dry out something between now and
tomorrow night. Tshirts are cool, with some kind of non-jeans pants.
Jeans are OK, too, but every guy wears them, go for pants if you want to
stand out a little. And go for PLEATHER
(http://nwc.syr.edu/~jdimpson/winter2001/valentine/SDSC00175.jpg) to
really stand out. (How many times do I have to post this link before
someone remarks on it? Sheesh.)

There are only 10 possibilities. DIAL THEM ALL.

I think you're looking for excuses not to go. Like I did last weekend.

I don't think she was trolled. She knew the response I was baiting for
(and almost made in the original, but then I thought that would be too
unsophisticated) and then Rich made the sophisticated response, then Marie
sophisticatedly told us that she Got The Joke.

I used to think I was a submissive, but I'm not so sure because I'm
not very comfortable following at all. Possibly because I've only had
to follow in two cases: one, when a teacher was trying to demonstrate
how I was screwing up a move, and the other time, when I was dancing
with this chyk who, I had thought earlier, had a maybe 5% chance of
being a guy in very convincing drag, and she asked if she could lead.
(NOT FOR KONTEXT-AWAY! I ended up dancing with her after I had asked
someone else and she said "Not right now, but my friend wants to dance!")

I go alone. I go to the club to meet people, usually. And it helps
to choose a genre like swing dancing where offers to dance are readily
accepted, since anyone who has taken the time to learn has already
proven his worthiness in some way.

Non-frat house.

Not strapped to dudes' backs, either. Rather, duct-taped to glass front
doors of house, to protect said glass from drunken dancers and to make
feeble attempt to protect the world at large from the incredible
vibrations eminating from non-frat house known as ROCK N ROLL!

Also, when the rockin' and dancin' is all over, and the band, who is from
NYC, and the groupies, who are from other places, need a place to sleep
(because not one of them hooked up, as usual), the mattresses come down,
an attempt is made to find the least beer-soaked side of them, and they
are used for sleeping on. Very convient.

No, this is happening in Phoenix and it's more of a seminar/class sort
of thing but it's special because it's the whole weekend and it's
world-famous teachers! And when I'm done I'll be SUPER-l33t at
lindy hop and balboa!

To get an idea of how famous they are... you know that movie the 13th

of a lindy hop contest? They're both in that scene. And they were in
that one episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, too.
