There was a post last week from someone who was having problems running
the ext3 file system on a laptop because it was interfering the with the
suspend to disk file used by the APMD system. I didn't see if the problem
had been resolved and I couldn't find the posts in Google Groups. Is
anyone using the ext3 file system on a laptop?, I'm particularly
interested in the Dell Inspiron 5000 because that's what I own. I'm using
7.1 at the moment and I'd like to know what other peoples experiences
have been before doing an upgrade to 7.2.

Thanks

I'm running EXT3 on an i8100. I have no idea about the suspend to disk,
though, because I don't have it or use it. I've got RH7.0 but have
upgraded it to somewhere near 7.2 status and got my kernel up to 2.4.14
with the EXT3 patch. I've got APM built into the kernel with no other
options below it. The laptop shuts down fine and powers itself off.

The EXT3 works fine and I've got it on all the slices. For grins and
giggles, I opened almost all the programs I have, opened documents and
edited some of them, then turned off the power with everything open.
Reboot took about 5 seconds longer than a clean reboot instead of the 10
minutes or so the fsck takes with the ext2 filesystem.

I am using DELL Inspiron with RH7.2 and don't have the hibernation
working. If you are interested in my experiences (overall very good!) you
could check my site:

And please keep me updated on any success with APMD,

kind regards,

Uwe

Hibernation mode works on my Inspiron 5000 with Redhat 7.1 although it's
not reliable. I did have to make some changes in /etc/sysconfig/apmd in
order to get the network to recover after going into sleep mode,
