I've since upgraded to IE6, but whatever @Home installed won't go away.
I go to Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings | Advanced and uncheck
the automatic configuration script (set to http://proxy:8080). I then close
all windows (folders and browsers). In regedit I can see that the
AutoConfigURL entry is gone. Opening IE6, I once again get the "Detecting
proxy" wait for about a minute, and a refresh of regedit indicates that the
proxy string has returned. Sure enough, check the setting in Internet
Options and the checkbox is checked again, and the proxy URL has been re-
installed.
How do I get rid of this? What's putting that setting back in?
For @Home users, you may need to do this.
Go to Start/Run, then type:
regsvr32 /u ahiehelp.dll
Or
regsvr32 -u ahiehelp.dll
Click OK.
Also, make sure that no @Home software is on your PC.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To use the Proxy server (@Home customers) do this:
Enter a check mark for "Use automatic configuration script". Then type in
"proxy:8080/" (no quotes).
The excite servise seems to be an option that a few feeble minded ISPs got
sucked into before Excite went banckrupt.
Unfortunately, your best solution seems to be a fresh install of at least
your browser and possibly your entire OS.
To bad these volitile softweare companies don't have a WAY OF FORWEARNING US
USERS how to aviod unneccessary BS as this.
However Excite is a piece of bancRUPT SHIT to which your ISP should have
advised you not to get involved.,
The collasle blunder is ATT involvement. To which broadband customers will
probably have to pick up the tab.
You have to run "regsvr32 -u ahiehelp.dll" to unregister this leftover
of the uninstall. Then delete that @Home .dll file. Then your LAN
Settings should stick.
